RECEIVED
Soils Investigation Lot 6A, Barnhill Subdivision,
Anchorage, Alaska
Dear Mr. Laird,
This letter presents the results of the soils investigation
that we performed at your request on Lot 6A, Barnhill Subdivi-
sion. This property is located to the northwest of Dimond Boule-
yard in the 6700 block.
On May 13, lg82, 'we drilled a test boring to a depth of 20
feet at the location directed by Mr. John Laird. The drilling
was performed by Mr. John Graham, of our staff, using our
Bombardier-mounted Arctic Gas Auger. Mr. Pete Chalich,
Geological Engineer on our staff, logged the boring and obtained
sampl es.
This work was requested to be performed to the minimum
standards of the Department of Health and Environmental Protec-
tion (DHEP). These standards include the drilling of a soils
boring to a depth of 20 feet and the visual classification of the
soil strata encountered by a field technician. In soils which
are visually classified to include more than 6% silt, (soil finer
than the #200 screen size), a percolation test is required to be
performed in the area most likely to be developed for the absorp-
tion system. Due to the clean nature of the soils observed from
7.0 to 20 feet, no percolation test was performed. The Soils Log
and Boring Location Sketch are presented on the standard DHEP
form, Plate 1. As a check to our visual classifications, a sieve
analysis was performed on a sample from a depth of 7.5 feet. The
results of the sieve analysis are presented as Plate 2.
All soils were visually classified in the field according to
the Unified Soils Classification System presented on Plate 3 and
the Textural Classification System presented on Plate 4. Per-
forated 1-1/2 inch nominal standpipe was placed in the deep
boring to allow for observation of free water level after drill-
ing. However, the boring sloughed below 13 feet, so no after-
drilling observations could be performed below that depth.
We were requested to perform this investigation to the
minimum standards required by the Department of Health and En-
vironmental Protection. It should be noted that in accordance
with these standards, the classifications of the soils are visual
and performed by a soils technician. These classifications are
subject to change. Only the visual classification of the sample
obtained from 7.5 feet has been verified by laboratory analyses.
This work was performed for the sole purpose of preliminary
evaluation by the Department of Health and Environmental Protec-
tion of the suitability of on-site sewer system development. Any
extrapolation of this data for other purposes is not within the
intent of the investigation or requested services. We trust the
foregoing is sufficient for your immediate needs and is compre-
hensive within its limited scope. If questions arise or if we
can be of any further service, please feel free to call.
Very truly,
Pete Cha lc , . . .
Geological Engineer

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
This report is the result of compiling information already completed
on ~he site over a long period of time. The original concept for
the configuration of lots was conceived back in 1975. The soils map
shows where the soils holes are located. There will be an additional
hole drilled for test purposes on lot 6.
This subdivision is a subdivision of Tract b and Lots I and 2 Barnhill
Subdivision into six lo~s. The proposed area is planned exclusive of
public water and sanitary sewer utilities for the present. ~evelopme~t
of adequate sanitary facilities will be the responsibility of the
~ndividual property owners. The septage disposal will consist of
conventional septic tanks draining into a seepage pit and/or drain
field. Drawings extracted from the Department of Health and Enviornmental
Protection, Municipality of Anchorage, have been included as a part
of this report for pictorial ourDoses of the septic systems required.
Water source will be from individually drilled wells.
The purpose of this report is to define the soils condi'tions wi~thin
the property and determine the area requirements for proper sewerage
seepage, in that particular soil.
SITE DESCRIPTION
This subdivision is located within the Municipality of Anchorage
along Dimond Blvd west of Jewel Lake Blvd. and west of the gravel pits
on the west end of Dimond Blvd. The land is quite hilly with abrupt
slopes in places. It is well wooded with large spruce and birch trees.
Specific drainage patterns would be hard to trace for the time being
mainly because of the disruption in the drainage to the east and the
configuration of the hills and dells of the whole area.
SUB-SURFACE SOILS AND CONDITIONS
Because this engineer did not do the specific soils work but only
compiled the information into a presentable form, the §eneral sub-surface
information is given herein from analysis of 'the information gathered.
Generallly the area has about 1.5 feet of overburden and rootmat covering
silty sandy gravels of a looSe nature, or just plain silty sands.
6oncl usions
The percolation tests performed on the soils are self explainator.y
fol~ the most part. The soils are somewhat loose in nature and are
receptive to sewerage disposal.
Based on the information obtained in these test holes, it is felt that
this subdivision is quite suitable for single family units. It is
felt that the soils conditions encountered do not preclude the utilization
of septic tanks and soils absorption systems for residential use.

Lots 1 & 2, Tract A & Lot 2 Tract B, Barnhill Subdivision
Dear Mr. Laird:
We are submitting herewith the tes~boring results and our comments
r~S~rding soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This
investigation was performed in accordance with ypur request of
October 27, 1975 and those procedures outlined in a letter dated
July 15, 1975, by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorag? Area
Borough Department of Environmental Quality.
A total of two test holes were put down within the above mentioned area
for the purpose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the
proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with an auger
type drilling rig and the test holes were extended to a total depth
of 20.0 feet below ground surface. The final log prepared for the test
hole has been included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the-test hole.
Perculation tests were performed on each test hole at a depth of
12.0 feet.
We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you.

Mr. John Laird
Subject: Soils and Lot size - Barnhill Subdivision · Tract B, Lot 2 (approximately 6 acres)
Dear Mr. Laird:' ' .m.
Re-e~a'luation of the Subject property indicates it cannot be developed
at the current density it is zoned (R-lA). This is because public sewer
and water are not available to serve'the property and development must
rely on private wells and sewer systems.
The property could be subdivided into 1.25 to 1.50 acre lots using
private wells ~nd sewer systems to serve single family .dwellings. This
is the same development plan we came up with approximately 2 years ago
when you submitted a proposal to subdivide this property.
Sincerely,
~ro~m~21 Engineering
