RE: SEPTIC TANK UPGRADE PERMIT
LEGAL: BEAR VALLEY BLOCK 2, LOT 1
The owner has requested that we obtain a septic permit to upgrade the existing aged steel septic
tank on the above referenced lot. We propose to install a 1000-gallon HDPE tank per the
attached design to serve the existing 3-bedroom residence. The lot and area are served by private
wells. The design will not impact any of the neighboring properties. Please contact us if you
have any questions.
Sincerely,
Curtis Huffman, P.E.

Subject: Soil Investigation for Sanitary Sewer System, Lot ~ Block 2,
Bear Valley Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska
Dear Mr. Nash:
At your request of October 3, 1977, we conducted an examination of the
excavation for the proposed sanitary sewer system on the subject lot.
Upon arrival at the site, standing water was found in the trench at a
depth of approximately 4 1/2 feet. On October 4, 1977, we re-examined
the excavation and found the water table to have stabilized at 4 1/2
feet.
The test hole that was to determine subsurface soil conditions within
the area of the proposed sanitary sewer system was drilled on August 9,
1977 (R&M Project No. 751213). At that time groundwater was not encounter-
ed while drilling. An addition on. the drilling log has been made to
show the seasonal groundwater table. A copy of the log has been included
in attached Drawing A-01.
In addition, on October 5, 1977, we performed a second percolation test
within a 6-inch diameter test hole hand dug to a depth of 2.25 feet.
This test hole was located 12 feet downslope from the existing ditch and
equidistant from either end of the ditch. All depths were measured from
the top of the hole. The data in Table 1 show average infiltration from
the depths indicated to the bottom of the hole. The measured percolation
rate was 8.57 minutes per inch.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you. Please contact
us if you have any questions concerning this letter or if we can be of
additional service.
Very truly yours,

Subject: Soil Investigation for Sanitary Sewer System~L~ot 1, Block 2
Lot 4, Block 3; ~B~ Bear Valley' Subdivisionj A~horage,
Alaska
Gentlemen:
At your request of August 5, 1977, we conducted a subsurface soils
investigation on each of the subject lots at the proposed location of
the sanitary sewer system. The investigation complied with those proce-
dures required by the Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Health
and Environmental Protection.
This investigation, which was accomplished on August 9, 1977, consisted
of three test holes, one at each location, drilled to depths of 18.5 to
20.0 feet below the existing ground surface. The test holes were sited
according to your instructions. Their locations and soils logs are
shown in attached Drawings A-01, A-02, and A-03. Samples were taken at
the depths shown on the soils logs and the samples will be held in
storage at our lab for approximately six months. Drilling was accompli-
shed with a rotary drill rig using continuous-flight solid-stem auger
with an outside diameter of 6 inches. All material brought to the
surface by the augers was continuously monitored by an experienced
engineering geologist.
The topography at each drilling site is moderately sloping to the north.
At the time of the investigation the sites had original vegetation
consisting of alders, spruce and hemlock. The top of each test hole was
located at original ground surface.
The soils encountered in the test holes are shown in the test hole .logs
in Drawings A-01, A-02, and A-03. The symbols used in these drawings
are explained in Drawings B-01 and B-02. Each log displays specific
conditions encountered at the test location. However, subsurface condi-
tions may vary in other parts of the lots without any apparent surficial
evidence of the change. G encountered in Test Hole Ne. 1
(Lot 4, Block 4).at_a~kapproximat~ .d~'feet. Groundwater was
not encountered in Test Holes No. 2 and No. 3.'--~ck wee not encountered
At the time the holes were drilled, seasonal frost was not present and
permafrost was not encountered, i '

A percolation test was performed within each test hole at the depths
shown in attached Tables 1, 2, and 3. All depths were measured from the
top of the ho~e. The data in the tables show average infiltration from
the depths indicated to the bottom of the hole. The measured percolation
rates were as follows:
Subdivision Block Lot Test Hole No.
Percolation Rate
Bear Valley 4 4 1 1.5 Minutes Per Inch
Bear Valley 3 4 2 4.1 Minutes Per Inch
Bear Valley 2 1 3 5.5 Minutes Per Inch

CLASSIFICATION~ CONSISTENCY AND, S,,Y,,,MBOLS
CLASSIFICATION: Identification and classification of the soil is accomplished in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Normally, the grain size
.distribution determines classification of the soil. The soil is defined according to
major and minor constituents with the minor elements serving as modifiers of the
major elements. For cohesive soils, the clay becomes the principal noun with the'
other major so[l constituents used as modifier; i.e. sClty clay, when the clay particles
are such that the clay dominates soil properties. Minor soil constituents may be
added to the classification breakdown in accordance with the part{cie size proportion
listed below; i.e. sandy silt w/some gravel, trace clay.
no call - 0 - 3% trace - 3 - 12% some - 13 - 30%
SOIL CONSISTENCY - CRITERIA: Soil consistency as defined below and determined
by normal field and laboratory methods applies only to non-frozen mater{al. For
these materials, the influence of such factors as soil structure, i.e. fissure
systems, shrinkage cracks, slickensides, etc., must be taken into consideration
in making any correlation with the consistency values listed below. In permafrost
zones, the consistency and strength of frozen soils may vary significantly and
unexplainably with ice content, thermal regime and soil type.
