Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 Subject: Upgrade Sewer Permit - Sun Valley Block 4, Lot 3 It has been determined that the absorption field of the subject property is saturated. Subsequently, the owner has requested we proceed forward to obtain a septic permit to upgrade the septic system. The general slope of this lot is from east to west at a grade of approximately 3-7% over the septic area. On May 8, 2014 a testhole was performed to investigate soils and groundwater. The results of this test are attached for your review. The proposed upgrade will serve the existing 4 -bedroom house. We propose to install two 5 -Wide 44' long trenches. Groundwater was encountered at 10' during excavation and was at 8.8' at monitoring. The property and adjacent lots are served by public water. There is no surface water within 100' of the proposed system and there are no known curtain drains within 50'. Box 19-6650 Anchorage, AK 99519 Dear On -Site Staff: I am submitting this report to provide an explanation of the procedure used and observations made relating to the adequacy test I conducted on April 2, 2009 on the wastewater disposal system on Lot 3, Block 4, Sun Valley Heights S/D. According to Municipal records the wastewater disposal system was installed in August of 1973 and begins with a 1250 -gallon single compartment steel septic tank. At some later date it appears that a double cleanout was installed downstream of the septic tank as well as another cleanout at the downstream end of the septic tank. The septic tank appears to be the original tank and there is no visible settlement over it indicating imminent potential for collapse. Effluent from the septic tank flows into a log crib seepage pit with gravel dimensions of 14' by 14' and an effective depth of 7 feet. There is a cleanout/monitor tube in the seepage pit, which had a flt id depth of 67 inches prior to the start of my test. The inspection report shows there to be three shallow "finger' drainfields emanating from the seepage pit with a total length of 217 feet and widths of i feet. The effective gravel depth in these drainfields is 6 inches below the distribution pipes. These drainfields do not have additional monitor tubes, but as Jeff Poet and I discussed and agreed on 3/31/09, the monitor tube in the seepage pit should reflect their performance as well. To assess the adequacy of the system on April 2, 2009 1 added a total of 521 gallons of water into it through the cleanout at the upstream end of the septic tank. After the fluid levels had stabilized 1 measured the fluid depth in the monitor tube in the seepage pit to be 9'h inches higher than prior to the start of the test without being backed up into the septic tank. 1 then rechecked the fluid level 143 minutes later, at which time the fluid depth ir the seepage pit was 6 inches above its original level. Based on this demonstrated absorption I concluded that the septic system is still able to accept wastewater at a rate of greater than 600 gallons per day, and thus is still adequate for a 4 -bedroom residence. There are a couple of small unheated outbuildings near the seepage pit which may be over part of the supplemental drainfields, but their presence does not appear to affect the performance of the system.
