Re: SOILS INVESTIGATION OF 15 ACRE PARCEL OFF UPPER DE ARMOUN ROAD
Dear Mr. Clark:
On July 24 and July 25, 1981 a soils investigation was made of
your property, the S½, NE¼, SW¼, NE¼, SEC 25 T 12 N, R3W, S.M. and SE¼,
SW¼, NE¼, SEC 25 T 12 N, R3W, S.M. A track mopnted rotary auger drill
rig. from Denali Drilling Company was used to bore four (4) test holes.
Visual soil classifications and soil togs were made for each test hole.
Percolation tests were run on each test hole.
This soils investigation was undertaken to determine the suitability
of this parcel of land to support individual water and wastewater systems
for residential R-6 development.
Attached please find the soils report and findings. If I can be of
any further assistance in the project please fell free to contact me.
Very truly yours,

· SOILS INVESTIGATION
INTRODUCTION
The geology of the Anchorage Bowl Hillside Area is the result of several
glacial processes. The auailability of ground water and the suitability
of on-site wastewater disposal are directly related to the geological
structure of the Hillside Area. Materials deposited during the Wisconsin
Glaciation period make up most of the surfical sediments in the Hillside
area. Most of the unconsolidated glacial sediments contain poorly sorted
rock particles ranging in size from clay to boulders. During and following
the retreat of the Wisconsin Ice Mass, melting water streams moved great quant-
ities of detrital material. In part, the modern topography and surface drainage
of the Hillside Area are a direct result of flow of melt water runoff channels.
Soil units for the Hillside Area were mapped by H. R. Schmoll and Ernest Dobrovolnt
(USGS Map 1-787-A). The upper DeArmoun Road area where this particular
parcel of land is located was mapped as slope deposits. The slope deposits
consist of intermixed deposits of fresh and weathered bedrock fragments and
reworked glacial drift which contains clean and well-sorted or dirty sand
and gravel.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION
A series of four (4) test holes were drilled July 24, 1981 using a tracked
mounted rotary auger from Denali Drilling. A visual classification of the
soils and soil logs were made. (see attached) All holes were augered to
a sixteen (16) foot depth. No ground water was encountered in any of the
test holes.
After drilling, each test hole was filled with fresh water and saturated
for a twenty-four (24) hour period. During this time the Anchorage Bowl
was rainy and on July 24, 1981, 0.23 inches of rain fell and on July 25, 1981
0.51 inches of rain fell at Anchorage International Airport as reported
by the U.S. Weather Bureau. On July 25, 1981 percolation tests were run
on each test hole. Three of the test holes, TH l, TH 3, and TH 4 had caved
in material from the side walls to the bottom of the holes. The percolation
tests were therefore run at a higher elevation than the bottom of the holes.
CONCLUSIONS
The percolation rates varied from 5 to 12 mnutes per inch and
fell within the acceptable range for an on site individual waste
disposal system. Provided all other zoning and plattiag require-
ments are met the soil conditions o£ this parcel of land could be
developed to support an on site waste disposal system. To
provide a factor of safety for on site waste disposal it is
recommended that 210 square feet per bedroom be used in the
design of these wastewater disposal systems.
