The Contractor had not planned to place perforated pipe under the driveway as was a suggestion by Dan Roth with the Department of Health and Human Services. The Contractor had not been informed of this change to the design until we mentioned it to them. The trenching was completed correctly under the driveway while we were on site. The septic tank has been backfilled and riser piping installed. There is evidence that insulation had been installed over the tank as was required on the plan. A solid pipe run has been installed from the tank to the beginning of the trenching where it will connect to the new perforated drain piping. This line has been installed with insulation placed above it. The soils under the driveway will need to be compacted and insulation will need to be placed over the piping. I suggested to the Contractor that he place a thicker lift of backfill material over the new drain piping for the initial compaction. The reason for this is to avoid crushing the pipe. The trench had been excavated deep enough to allow adequate drain rock placement and proper cover over the piping. Shot several photos of the installation. The riser pipes have been placed vertically plumb with the exception of the end cleanout which will be set vertically when the drain rock installation is completed. The drain piping has been left exposed for inspection and is placed level. The Contractor placed a 4" thick layer of insulation over the pipe at the driveway and placed a 2" thick layer of insulation over the transmission piping as is shown on the plans. The drain rock on site is within the gradation tolerances, but it is not as clean as we would have liked to have seen. There was some fine, silty material on the drain rock, however the quantity of silt should not pose a problem with the operation of the drain trench. All of the drain rock was placed before we leR the site. The Contractor placed 2" of drain rock over the perforated piping and then placed a layer of separation geotextile over the drain rock layer. This is intended to keep the fine silts and soils out of the treatment layer. We suggested to the Contractor that they compact over the driveway only. The top of the trench, outside of the driveway, should not be compacted, but rather mounded to allow settlement and drainage away from the trenches. The sample was taken at an approximate depth of 2.5 feet, approximately 20 feet west of Test Hole #1. These results indicate that the soil existing mil is not suitable as a f~.ter material; however, the DltFIS also waives the requirement for a filtration layer provided that the soil that the system is to be installed in is primarily sand. This means that more the 50% of the Soll by weight must pass the #4 sieve as in the case in fl]is sample. However, I have some concerns with the percolation rates and the gradation of the soil sample. The actual. gradation of the sample does raise some questions. The relatively high (15 % plus) percentage of material by weight passing the F200 sieve would lead me to conclude that the percolation rate was somewhat lower then reported, had I not/[ready had results. The ~mple was taken at 2.5 feet as the undisturbed soil was extremely dense and difficult to dig. I would have preferred a sample from below 5 feet. The dense condition of the soil in an und/sturbed state would also lead me to conclude that the percolation rate observed would be somewhat lower the~ reported. It is possible that a sample taken around 5 feet would produce a lower percentage passing the/~200 sieve. Due to the above discrepancies, we are compelled to request that we be allowed to conduct another percolation test. This test would be carded out at such a location as to encompass the proposed primary and alternate septic system. In any event, it is very likely that the Department of Health and Human Services would require this test be conducted prior to final permitting of the septic system. However, in order to come to an equitable solution we propose the following: Should the percolation rate not significantly very from the results provided to date and/or should the DI-tHS waive the requirement that the an additional percolation test be performed, we w/Il include the cost of the additional percolation test in our agreed to lump sum. We will proceed with the design based on the percolation rates you provided. It is our understanding that the DI-IIqS requires the original forms and signatures on these documents be provided. Therefore, we request that these be provided to us. It is anticipated that the design will be submitted to the DHHS no later yOU do not receive total number of pages I/st~d, please call (907) 279-0543 The additional percolation test will not change this schedule. ' )n another note, I hav~ been in contact with the DI-IHS in regards to the requirements for abandoning the . existing well. These requirements are relatively straight forward: The casing must be cut 12' (I recommend at least 24") below finished grade. The well must then filled with sand to 10 feet below finished grade. The remainder of the casing must be filled with bentonite olay. A t/4~ steel plate is then requJ.red to bo welded onto the easing. The DHI-IS indicated that they would not approve the septic system until an engineer certified that the well had been abandoned in the referenced manor. ~ ~ ,~omme~d that you ~ont~ot t~ee we~ ¢4n~,s in thc ~ea to ~,ro~ie~ hi~ on.~,~n~o~g th.~ w~._~.t~ also recommended that you.have them bid on the drilling of the new well at this,,fune, r~eep ~m mm~ m..at it may be cheaper if you SUpulate that th? new well does not have to be drfil~l'in the near futute as ute septic and well installers are very busy this time of yea~. / / Should you have any questions, please give me a c~l. // Sincerely ~ ,~ " Project Eng~nee~r If you do ~ot reoeive to~ number of pages ~i~ed, please ca/l (907) 279-0543 ~UN ~b;X~ ~HFK, hXUN ~ N!L~UN ?P,X NO. 58)44~ ?.02 P.O. The owner of the lot is building a new house on this lot. It is my understanding that there had been another house on the lot which had burned down some time ago. There is an existing well on the lot which will be abandoned before the construction of the proposed improvements. It is my understanding that there had been a boot leg septic system on the lot; however, the 500 gallon tank and wood crib have since been abandoned. Proposed System Design: The proposed system has been designed as a deep trench system. The percolation rates obtained indicate percolation rates in excess of 1 minute per inch; however, the insitu soil is sand with some gravel (at least 75 % passing the # 4 sieve). Percolation tests and a foundation soils report is attached for your review. Test holes were excavated to 20' in the area of the proposed septic system. No water was seen at the time of the excavation or during subsequent inspections. The proposed house is to be four bedrooms, giving a design flow of 600 gallons per day. An application rate of 1.2 gpd/ft2 was used in the design. The area required was calculated to be 500 ft2. A deep trench, with five feet of gravel below the pipe was used, yielding a required trench length of 50 feet. Approximately 53 feet of trench has been provided. The proposed septic tank is 1250 gallons and is to have four feet minimum cover. The trenches are designed to be five feet deep, with six inches of gravel around the pipe, and five feet of gravel below the pipe, for a total depth of 10-1/2 feet. Over 40 Years Serving Alaska 911 West Eighth Avenue · Anchorage, Alaska 99501-3497 · (907) 279-0543/FAX (907) 276-7679 TRYCK NYMAN HAYES, INC. On-Site Services October 12th, 1995 Page 2 Lot information: The subject lot is approximately 2.5 acres; however, the lot is constrained on the south by a small intermittent creek which flows east to west downslope and angles slightly to the north. The proposed house is to be located on a bench at the north east comer of the house. This bench is surrounded by slopes which exceed 25 %. These slopes extend approximately 40 feet horizontaly where this slope meets a more shallow slope, (less then 25%). The proposed septic system has been set back more then 50 feet from the slope to west of the proposed development. The system is approximately 35 feet from the slope to the south; however, this area is to be filled to a much gentler slope when the house is built. In any event, the depth of the proposed system and the relative short length of slope, make it unlikely that there would be any problem even if this slope was not filled as planned. Unfortunately, the separation distance constraints as well as architectural considerations all conspire to place most of the development on this lot into the north east comer of the lot. The garage for the house is located on the north side of the house, away from the creek. The associated driveways and parking areas are also located in the area. This is also the only location on the lot where a septic system can be installed. This configuration has forced us to design a split trench drain field, with a portion of trench on either side of the driveway. The sections of trench are connected with a solid section of pipe. This pipe is protected from freezing using 4 inches of rigid insulation. The designated replacement system is located 14' to the west of the existing system. At least 60 feet of trench could be installed in this area. In addition, if required, the gravel depth could be increased due to the deep water table, further increasing the available square footage of trench provided. Possible Points of Contamination: It is unlikely that there would be any contamination of the wells on the surrounding lots. The lot immediately to the north is undeveloped at this time. Due to the location of the improvements on this lot, the lot to the south is more then 204 feet from the septic system· Any lots to the east are separated by Trails End drive and in any event are up-slope. The lots to the west, while down slope, are more then 300 feet from the proposed septic system. The creek to the south and west of the septic system is another possible point of contamination. The new and replacement systems are located more then 100 feet from this creek. The relative deep depth of trench and the provided separation distance should provide adequate protection for the creek. TRYCK NYMAN HAYES, INC. On-Site Services October 12, 1995 Page 3 The proposed well for this lot is located down slope from the proposed septic system. This is always a concern and a possible point of contamination. The constraints of the lot dictate this location. The rapid percolation rates measured tend to exacerbate this potential; however, there is additional protection provided in this design. The relative depth of the ground water table (at least 20 feet) to the bottom of the gravel (10-1/2 feet) is at least 9-1/2 feet. This is more then double the required separation distance and should prove to be adequate protection for the proposed well. In addition, the high percentage of sand in the insitu soil should allow for significant de-nitrification of the effluent. I do not foresee any problems with contamination of the proposed well. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call. Sincerely; ~-~-~Shawn P. Snisarenko P.E. I found them helpful and constructive. In response to your ground water monitoring requirement concerns, we have monitored to the ground water level in the monitoring tube installed by a representative of DHI Consulting Engineers on two occasions prior to the submission of the plans to your office for approval. No ground water was found in this monitoring tube during our inspections. We have also incorporated your suggestion that we install perforated piping under the paved areas of the proposed lot, even though the piping in these areas cam~ot be considered in the design of the system. Attached please find the original, stamped percolation test results for the tests performed by DHI engineers and results from an additional percolation test carried out by a Tryck Nyman Hayes Inc engineer in training. Updated plans which reflect the change in piping as outlined above and show the location of the additional percolation test are also included. Please substitute the plans in the original submittal with these plans. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.
