Parcel 26D, Sec. 23, Dear Mr. Morris: By means of this letter I am requesting a waiver of the required separation distances between the well and the septic tank down from 100 feet to 77 feet, and between the well and the soil absorption trench down from 100 feet to 91 feet for the residence on the subject lot located at 11311Ridgecrest Drive. The waiver should also address the fact that the well on Parcel 26C is 98 feet from the closest part of the septic tank on the subject lot. To assist you in your evaluation I have prepared a site plan showing the layout of the system, and have enclosed copies of pertinent backup material. The well on Parcel 26D was drilled in January 1981, and according to the driller's log has a total depth of 230 feet, and a yield of 30 gpm. The log shows numerous hardpan and clay strata between 15 feet and 170 feet, which should provide an excellent barrier protecting the aquifer from contamination coming from above. On May 26 the static water level in the well stood at 168 feet below the top of the casing, and steady pumping at 8 gpm of over 600 gallons caused the water level to be drawn down to 169 feet, but no further. Thus, the well yield is more than adequate for a three bedroom residence. Water samples taken on May 21 showed 0 coliform colonies / 100 ml and 0.24mg/1 nitrate, both of which are satisfactory. The well on Parcel 26C was drilled in December, 1980 to a total depth of 222 feet through very similar material. The wastewater disposal system was installed in January 1981 and consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank followed by 39 feet of trench containing 5 feet of gravel. According to the inspection report prepared by Mr. Kennedy of your office the welt was approved to be 83 feet from the septic tank and 99 feet from the absorption trench. I tested the adequacy of the system on May 26 by adding water directly into the absorption trench. At the start of the test the fluid depth in the trench was 20 inches, and the addition of 678 gallons of water caused this level to rise 11.75 inches further. The fluid level was back to within 1 inch of the original level 2.5 hours after the flow was stopped. Based on this test, I concluded that the system is adequate for a three bedroom residence. There was no indication of a high water table. According to the soils log prepared in October, 1980, the soil in the absorption stratum consists of silty sandy gravel with a perc rate ranging from 6.5 to 10 minutes per inch. No groundwater was encountered to 12 feet. The topography of the lot is gently sloping to the west, at an average of 10%. Thus, should either the septic tank or the absorption trench fail, surfacing effluent would tend to flow directly away from, rather than towards, the two wells in question. Based on all of the aforementioned factors, it is my opinion that the requested waiver can be granted in this case without danger of compromising public health.
