The as-built for the new system, however, was never approved because it was determine.d the new system encroached approximately 4" into the 4' separation distance required between the bottom of the bed and groundwater. The owner of the property has since attempted to subdivide the property into two lots. The subdivision will not be approved until this septic system is brought into compliance with the Municipal Ordinance. We are therefore proposing to reconstruct the absorptio, n bed with the necessary 4' separation to groundwater. The existing bed will remain in place and abandoned for possible reconstruction and reuse in the future. The attached Site Plan and backup documentation identify the location and configuration of the new absorption area and the parameters used in the design. Also identified on the plans is the location of the existing well and the 100' protective radius along with the location of the test holes and Rabbit Creek which traverses the lot to the south. Existing drainage patterns are shown and will not be altered by the development of the lot. Two separate engineers have placed several test holes near the location of the new absorption bed during the odginal design and construction of the existing system. These holes indicate coarse poorly to well graded gravel cobbles. Pemolation tests in the matedal resulted in rates between less than I and 3.5 minutes per inch. This matedal is underlain by well graded sand which percolates slightly more than 5 minutes per inch. No groundwater was found dudng placement of the test holes but was noted during the monitoring period with the highest level at 6.75' below the surface. We are therefore proposing to place a 15' wide by 50' long absorption bed with .5' of gravel beneath the distribution pipe. The total depth of the bed will be approximately 1.5'. Mounding will be required over the bed to provide the minimum 3' of protective cover. The ground surface on the lot slopes as shown on the attached Site Plan with a steep slope above the proposed bed site and gentle grades to the south of the new site. The new absorption bed will be constructed on a fairly fiat surface in conformance with Municipal requirements and parallel to ground contours where possible. . I discussed the situation with Ed Sanderson of Acreage Systems and he felt it would less expensive to rebuild the system at a new site rather than rebuild the existing absorption bed. The existing bed will remain in tact and shown as an alternate site for purposes of the subdivision. I have furnished Ed a copy of the design and asked for a cost estimate to complete the work. I will forward his estimate when it becomes available. The total cost of our work this far is $850.00. This amount includes the $320.00 fee required by the City to review the design and issue the construction permit. We anticipate this will take approximately 10 days. Lot 33, Section 33, T12N, R3W Septic System Design and Permit Application I have reviewed your comments concerning the subject septic system construction permit and have revised the design accordingly. Two additional percolation tests were performed in the area of the new absorption bed. The results were more in line with those obtained by Tobben Spurkland in that materials encountered were sandy silts with some coarse gravel. The percolation rate was approximately 3 minutes per inch. No sand filter is required based on our findings. If coarse gravel is encountered during the construction of the new bed a sand filter will be added at that time. Test holes have been labeled on the plans and indicate the engineer responsible. In addition, dimensions from the lot line and the existing absorption bed have been added. No diverter valve will be placed as the existing bed is thought to encroach into the 4' separation distance from groundwater at some point during the year. Please let me know if additional information is required before the construction permit can be issued.
