Also attached are the previous MOA approval (February, 1981) and the engineer's supporting statement. You will note on the MOA forms that the system was installed prior to 1960. There are no records that detail the dimensions of the septic system, nor is there a well log. According to the 1981 MOA approval (obtained when the present ho~]~owners purchased the hon~), an adequacy test was perforlm~d. A letter from the professional engineer who performed the test verified that the system was adequate to handle 600 gallons per day. (The adequacy test performed by our firm on June 19, 1986, agrees with the previous adequacy test results.) We are sensitive to the desires of the Department of Health and Environmental Protection to have all possible information concerning the sizing of septic systems and the separation distance between the ground water table and the septic system. However, in this particular instance, the septic system proved rr~)re ~]an adequate by accepting 600 gallons in less than eleven hours (the dispersion rate was limited by slow well production). In order to establish drainfield sizing, excavation of the drainfield would be required which might da~ge the presently working system. The installation of monitoring wells and the associated engineering cost would be considerable and would be berne by the homeowner. with respect to the separation distance to the water table, the surface over the drainfield is approxi~tely ten (10) feet ENGINEERING, PLANNING~ SURVEYING 2220 E. 88th Ave. /Anct ora.Oo, Alaska 99507 / I elephone 907~349 6401 / 344 13o2 "Providing a quality personalized service to those bdlding Alaska's future" Susan Oswald Page 2 July 1, 1986 higher in elevation than the road serving the property (East 144th Avenue). There is no sign of ground water adjacent to the road. Therefore, we conclude that the minimum separation distance of four feet between the bottom of the septic system and the water table is probably n~intained or exceeded throughout the septic field area. In conclusion, we are requesting approval of the well/septic systems without further excavation or ground water monitoring well installation. This request is based on the perforn~nce of the system as it presently exists, as well as on the basis of grandfather rights.
