Applying the 1.9 day retention time criteria to a 1,250 gallon tank yields an occu- pancy load of 9 persons. - more - Page2 The deterioration rate of the drain~ield due ~ Suspended solids clogging from too small a septic tank can be compensated for by enlarging the absorption area of the drainfield to produce a corresponding life expectancy. Based on a perco- lation of 20 min/inch the application rate suggested by U.S.P.H.S. in Figure 19 is Q = 5 = 1.1 gallons/SF-day. Your records indicate the field is SqoRt. T 143 LF x 4' W x 5' D. ApPlying the 50% reduction per U.S.P.H.S. Table 3, this yields an effective area of 1144 SF which serves .1144 SF (1.1 gal/SF/day) or 17 persons.  75 gal/person/day With time the.effective area will be reduced as will the percolation rate, thus, a~ ~ reduction in the appliCation rate. Allowing for the reduction of 30% in effective · area, the field would still support (0.7)(l144SF)(1.1 gal/SF/da~L~_) or 12 persons ~/ 75 gal/person/day based on current percolation. As the municipal criteria is based on 2/bedroom, the drainfield is theoretically / capable of supporting the load generated by 12 persons allowing for a 30% loss i, the efficiency of the system. ~ The home is located on 2 1/2 acres, leaving room for replacement drainfieldsV~ suitably separated from existing wells. Although the lot is large, clayey soils in certain areas will serve as a limiting factor. The home ~,~as occupied by two people for two years, one person for one and a years and three people for one-half a year. It will continue to be occupied byI three people under present ownership. Thus, the issue of protecting the public health and the interests of the buyer are not at issue as the system as present' constructed and operated certainly appears adequate for use by three permanent residents. The best proof of this being that the system is performing satisfactorily. The issue then becomes one of classification of rooms for the p~rpose of resale. At the present time the.drainfield appears adequate to serve a six bedroom home occupied by 12 persons. The septic tank is sized to handle a loading of nine persons yielding a four and one-half bedroom rating. The drainfield can be expected to deteriorate with time and nothing in this report should be construed as predicting the remaining life expectancy. Percolation or load tests can only measure the performance of the field at the time of the test. Thus, without a series of tests run over a long period of time to measure the rate of deterioration, any prediction of remaining life expectancy is an educated guess based solely on historical data from similar installations. As the system has the theoretical capacity to handle three times the loading it is actually being subjected to, the life expectancy of the system should be better than average if properly maintained. I cannot recommend the expense of running a load test on the system as it would only prove the present capacity of the system which is known to be adequate for the present and intended use. I request that the home be classified as a five bedroom home. If you feel it neces- sary to qualify this to limit permanent occupancy to nine persons unless the septic tank volume is increased through the installation of a small secondary tank, then please do so rather than classify the home as a four or four and one-half bedroom one. If the U.S.P.H.S. standards were applied, the'system would qualify for a five bedroom home rating. - more - , ~. !
