Sewer System, Lot 55D, Resubdivision of Subdivision 55, Campbell Creek Small Tracts NW~, Sec 33, T13N, R3W, Alaska Dear Mr. McKeinnan : At your request of October 26, 1979, we conducted a subsurface soils investi- gation at the proposed location of the sanitary sewer system on the subject lot. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection. This investigation, which was accomplished on October 29, 1979, consisted of a test hole excavated to a depth of fifteen feet below the existing ground surface. The test hole was sited according to your instructions and its location is shown in attached Drawing A-01. Excavation was accomplished with a backhoe. All material excavated was continuously monitored by an experienced geotechnical engineer. The topography at the excavation site is generally horizontal. At the time of the investigation the site was occupied by a single family residence with an existing septic system apparently consisting of a septic tank and two leach field lines. The top of the test hole was located on fill material approximately three feet above original ground surface. The soils encountered in the excavation are shown in the test hole log in Drawing A-01. This log displays specific conditions encountered at the test location. However, subsurface conditions may vary in other parts of the lot without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not encountered. Bedrock was not encountered. At the time the hole was excavated seasonal frost was not present and permafrost was not encountered. A percolation test was performed within an adjoining test pit at a depth of five to seven feet. All depths were measured from the top of the hole. The data in Table 1 show average infiltration from the depths indicated to the bottom of the hole. The measured percolation rate was 109 minutes per inch. This investigation was performed in accordance with your request of August 18, 1975, and those procedures outlined ina letter dated July .15, 1975, by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department of Environmental Quality. A single test hole was put down within the Lot 55D area for the pur- pose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted backhoe and the test hole was extended to a total depth of 14.0 feet below ground surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01. Ground water was not encountered in the test hole. We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you. Therefore, an upgrade of the system will be required. Prior to the upgrade a soils test will need to be obtain and a permit issued from this department. The septic tank needs to be pumped with a receipt submitted to this office. Be sure to have the pumper put the number of gallons pumped from the tank as this office needs verification of its size. During this test the liquid level in the septic tank was monitored as water was added to the system. October 16, 1979 Tim McKeinnan Page '2- If the 3 bedroom residence on the property is to house 6 people, the average load on the system can be expected to be 450 gallons per day or .31 gallons per minute. During the test, the system accepted 32 gallons in 55 minutes. This indicates an average effluent acceptance rate of approximately .58 gallons per minute at the time of the test. Because the house on the lot is occupied, we assume that the leach field was at its normal degree of saturation. We can therefore conclude that the system is not disposing of effluent at an adequate rate for a 3 bedroom resi- dence. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you.
