The crib/drainfield is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to install a new deep trench type drianfield and a new 1250 gallon step tank. One test hole was excavated on the property and the drainfield was designed around the 30 foot radius of the testhole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached 2014 logs which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. The soil perked at less than 1 minute; however, based upon engineering judgment we are proposing to use an application rate of 0.8 GPD/Ftz. Based upon the attached result of the sieve analysis, we requesting that a sand filter be waived for this installation. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. 4. TOPOGRAPHY/SLOPE WAIVER REQUEST: As can be seen on the attached topo drawing, the slope runs east to west at 8%. Approximately 42 feet away from the proposed drainfield is a cutbank. The existing drainfield only several feet away from the cutbank and no daylighting has occurred. At an elevation 2.5 feet above the proposed invert with an imaginary 25% slope, the theoretical point of daylighting would not occur within 50 feet from the trench. 5. DRAINFIELD ORIENTATION WAIVER REQUEST: We request your department issue a waiver to allow for a portion of the drainfield to be installed perpendicular to the slopes. There will be a two (2) foot elevation change from one end of the trench to the other. To size the absorption area: • Determine the required size by multiplying the number of bedrooms in the household by the soil rating, as determined by percolation tests and Table 7. For a small commercial system, use Tables 1 through 3 of this manual to determine the quantity of wastewater to be treated and disposed of each day. To size the infiltrative surface, divide the total amount of wastewater by the recommended application rate shown in Table 7. If SM, GM, ML, or CL soils are encountered, the results of a percolation test must be used to size the system. The measured percolation rate should be compared to the values shown in Table 7 to determine the soil rating. If SW or SP soils are encountered the soil may be visually rated by certified installers or engineers. Size the required infiltrative surface by multiplying the soil rating by the number of bedrooms served. Note that approved homeowners must have their soil tested to size their system. 4. Sand Liners. Sand liners are required, (unless formerly waived by the department pursuant to the requirements in 18 AAC 72.260, Table C) when well or poorly graded gravel (GW or GP) is found in the absorption area unless additional treatment will be provided and is approved by ADEC. In most cases, GP and GW soils have such rapid percolation that adequate treatment of the wastewater is not provided unless a 2' thick sand liner is installed to slow the rate at which the wastewater passes through the soil. The sand liner increases filtration effectiveness, and produces a much higher quality effluent. Sand liners should have a maximum wastewater application rate of 1.2 gal/112/day (see Table 7). The distance between the septic leachfield serving the property and the west property line at approximately 1 ft. 2. The distance between the septic leachfield serving the property and the private well located on Lot 1, Block 3, Talus West S/D at approximately 94 ft. 3. The distance between the septic leachfield serving the property and the private well located on Lot 18, Block 3, Valhalla S/D at approximately 98 ft. A brief chronological history is as follows: The original septic system serving the referenced property was installed in 1971. Apparently the well serving the referenced property was installed shortly thereafter. The well on Lot 1, Block 3, Talus West was drilled in August, 1974. In June, 1978 the septic leachfield was installed too close to the property line and too close to the well on Lot 1, Block 3. These separation distance violations were apparently overlooked during the installation inspections. The well on Lot 18, Block 3, Valhalla was drilled in June, 1983 too close to the leachfield serving the referenced property. There have been subsequent well and septic approvals issued on each of these properties with these separation distance violations apparently overlooked. 17034 EAGLE RIVER LOOP, SUITE 204, EAGLE RIVER, ALASKA 99577 page 2 Lot 1, Block 2, Talus West February 17, 1993 Although the wells in question are actually slightly downhill from the referenced septic system, we feel the requested waivers may be granted for the following reasons: A. There is a roadway with two road ditches separating the septic system from the wells. This would prevent the surface migration of septic effluent from ever reaching the wells. B. Bacteria and nitrates sample results from the encroaching wells, along with the referenced well, were satisfactory. In fact, the nitrates levels were extremely low at less than 1 mg/l. Since septic effluent is very high in nitrates, these low levels detected suggest there has been no influence of the septic system on the wells. This is even after several years of use. C. Logs for the encroaching wells show the wells to be reasonably deep at 80 ft. and 125 ft. Both well logs show water was encountered at a deeper depth than the static water level. This suggests an artesian aquifer under pressure with a confining soil layer above. The logs depict "hardpan" and "clay" soil layers encountered during drilling, also attesting to the existence of confining soil layers. These confining soil layers would detour the migration of effluent travelling toward the groundwater aquifer. D. The well logs for the encroaching wells also show the wells to produce 8 - 10 gallons per minute (gpm). Since these wells serve single family homes we suspect the capacity of the submersible pumps within the wells to be approximately 5 gpm. This suggests the drawdown of the wells would be minimal. Even if the pumps have a greater capacity, the drawdown period would be minimal. This small drawdown would create only a minimal hydraulic gradient. Thus, use of the wells would not necessarily "draw" the septic effluent toward the well. page 3 Lot 1, Block 2, Talus West February 17, 1993 E. Soil reports for all three properties show the septic receiving soils to be rated between 175 and 250 sq. ft. per bedroom. These soil ratings are indicative of soils with a fair silt and sand content. These type of soils are generally ideal in treating septic effluent as it travels through the ground. Thus, the septic effluent would be "purified" long before it reached the encroaching wells. At this time we are pursuing letters of non -objection to the waivers from the property owners of the subject wells.
