RE: URGENT - SEPTIC TANK UPGRADE PERMIT
LEGAL: KNIK HEIGHTS BLOCK B, LOT 8
To whom it may concern:
The owner has requested we proceed forward to obtain a septic permit to upgrade the
collapsed septic tank on the subject lot. We request an expedited permit due to the health
and safety of the collapsed tank. The proposed upgrade will serve the existing 4-
bedroom house.
The lot and area is served by a private wells and there are no wells within 100 of the
proposed septic tank. The proposed design will not impact any of the neighboring
properties due to the lot layout. Please contact Brent M. Western or me if you have any
questions.
Sincerely,
Michael N. Anderson, P.E.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation for On-Site Sewer
Lot 8, Block B, Knik Heights Subdivision
Dear Mr. Good:
As requested, we performed a subsurface investigation to
determine the suitability of the subsurface soils on the
above referenced lot, for placement of an on-site sewage
disposal system. The exploration was conducted on September 10,
1975 utilizing a Mobile Drill B-50 drill rig, mounted on a
Flextrac-Nodwell tracked vehicle owned and operated by
Denali Drilling, Inc. The drilling was supervised and the
test hole logged by Mr. Pete Herstek, staff technician with
Alaska Testlab.
One test hole was placed 0n the lot to a depth of 20' as
located on Figure 1. The log of the test hole is enclosed
as Table A. It will be useful, to properly interpret the
test hole log, to read the standard explanatory information
contained in the back of this report.
After the hole was drilled it was filled with water and
allowed to stand overnight. The next day, Thursday,
September 11, 1975, Mr. Herstek returned to the lot and
refilled the hole with water to within 37" of the surface.
Over the next hour the water level was carefully monitored
and after 60 minutes the water level had dropped to 67.25"
below the ground surface, for a percolation rate of 2.0
minutes/inch. Utilizing the data tabulated in Table A--
"Absorption Area Requirements for Individual Residences", on
page 8, of 'the "Manual of Septic Tank Practice" published by
the U.S. Department of H~atth, Education & Welfare, the
absorption area requirements, per bedroo~ for a sewer system
placed in this soil is 85 square feet per bedroom.
Please note that on the date of exploration, no water table
was encountered. It should be remembered, though, that the
water table will normally fluctuate with seasonal and climatic
changes.
Mr. Jerry Good

Test Hole Log - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. Iftbe log includes soils sanlples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
Depth Interval - usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant change in soil type was observed tbrougb drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, Fl, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modifications to tile soil group due to
stratification, inchlsions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content - ibis is a qualitative measure:
dr_zy_, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
,.vet, no free water, often soft, if cobesive soil~
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free drainiug soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand. (Tbe moisture content is further defined by reference to PI,
LW, NP. M%or dilaten,_y.}
Densit[ - refers to more-or-less non-cobesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or witbout a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. Genera] intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness -- refers to more-ordess cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
the clay-silt groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft. soft, stiff, very stiff and bard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - Tbe largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-50 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indirectly by
actiou of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when revic',ving tile gradation sheets, if any.
the description on tile hole log must be considered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classifi~:ation - Tbis is a two letter code. See Unified
Classi.fication sheet for further definition. In some cases AASHO and/or
[:AA soil classifications may be sbown ils ,.veil as the unified.

Rock flour --- finely ground soil tbat is not plastic but otberwise appears

Organic Content -- usually described as Peat. PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles sucb as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck -- a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorpbus pea[ organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Testbole -- includes last sample interval.
Frost Line - seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.

includes description of icc content, often will mctude modified [Jnificd

permafrost studies.
