Today JRs started working on the new septic trench. I met the excavator operator at the house this morning. We discussed
location of the new trench. We discussed orientation or the trench to parallel slope contours. I left the house and went on to
another job. I received a phone call from the operator. He was attempting to tie into the existing trench with a diverter valve
so the homeowner would be able to drain to both trenches. 5
When the operator dug into the piping of the existing trench he found that the piping does not meet MOA code
requirements. The new piping is not compatible with the old piping. The old piping is thin walled perforated pipe and is
crushed as far as the operator could see. This explains why the house was experiencing backups. The water has no place to
drain. The current scope is for JRs to install the new trench. They will continue to do that. The existing trench is not useable
in its current condition. The existing perforated pipe would need to be dug up and replaced with appropriate piping. If the
homeowner desires this, it could be done at a later date. I have informed the homeowner of this development and they are

b. Covered, sealed, and heated to prevent freezing
Special Provisions: If the as -built survey submitted with the inspection report/record drawing confirms that the
well is less than 100 ft from the existing absorption field, a waiver request with justifications shall be submitted for
review and approval. Since this is outside the scope of this project, the waiver is not required to close out this
permit but will be required prior to any future COSA approval.

SPECIFICATIONS & DESIGN GUIDF.LINF.S
Septic Tank Replacement: This is an existing single family home @ 3 bedrooms. The existing
septic tank is in a failure mode. The tank has been pumping rocks when pumped. The existing
trench is still adequate. This requires a new 1000 gallon septic tank. The lot is served by a
private water well. Neighborhood lots have been developed. No adverse impacts are expected
from septic tank replacement. The lot slopes to the south. No conflicts to any neighbor lots is
anticipated. A creek is present on the east side of the lot & separation is maintained. The old
septic tank will be properly decommissioned. The old absorption trench will be connected to the
new tank.
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the Municipality of
Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water Regulations and Wastewater
Regulations.
• Two compartment, 1000 gallon septic tank.
• Watertight couplings on inlet & outlet.
• 5' minimum between the tank and bed. 10' to property lines.
• 4' of cover or insulation is required for septic tank; an equivalent of I" insulation for each foot soil
cover.
• Tank & solid pipe must beset on well compacted, stable soil.
• 4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required I' to 4' from foundation wall, prior to any
90 degree bend in 4 inch line, in each tank compartment, and two adjacent opposing cleanouts
between the tank and the absorption field, not more than 10' from the tank positioned to provide
cleanout access towards the tank and towards the absorption field.
• All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
• In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
• Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
• Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789, ABS ASTM
D2661,
• Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
• Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.
• Insulation board to be extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Styrofoam FII or equal)
• The existing septic tank will be abandoned; the septic tank will be pumped, crushed, and filled with
sand/gravel or removed and properly disposed of.
