ALASKA eFIUIROFIIT1E FITAL COFITROL SE!RUICeS, IF1C. I~ncli~¢¢rin(I 6 J~nuironm¢~lal $ludi~s To: Les Bucholz From: Leroy C. Reid Jr., PhD, PE Subject: Inspection of Lot 4, Block 5 Mann Subdivision for Fejes Developement On Friday, June 11, 1982, I visited the lot where Chris Fejes had installed the liftstatlon and shallow 5 foot wide trench. This visit was in request from a call from Chris Fejes. At that time he indicated that the basement had flooded and water had been pumped into the drainfield and the field was full of water at the time. At the time of arrival I found that the field was full of water. The water was up in the standpipe at the top of the perforated distribution line. I went back and checked the liftstation. Muddy water was running in the septic tank, indicating to me that water was pouring in from the basement or from a broken line at the end of the field. I checked the crawl space under the house and saw that a considerable amount of water had leaked into the space. One of the employees on the job indicated that Fred Mastel had been there and had dug up the liftstation because the line between the septic tank and the liftstation had been broken. The field appeared to be saturated. The field had been flooded with mnddy water and may have been ruined. Within several days to a week the water level in the field should drop back to normal once the water quits flowing. It appears that water has been draining from the southeast of the lot into the drainfield through an underground electrical ditch. I asked that a ditch be dug around the drainfield and to the north. The ground over top of the drainfield should be mounded to preclude water from getting into the field. At that: time Chris did not show up to meet with me, so I did not contact him at this time about the results. On June 16, 1982 I again visited the site to collect a water sample. Water was still running into the septic tank. The field was flooded and the landscaping had not been completed. On June 25, 1982 I met with Chris and inspected the system. He told me that the septic tank had been holed and that was the source of the water. No water was running into the system. The field still had water in the sump but it was several inches below the distribution pipe. The field had been landscaped properly. 1220 LUcst 251I~ AUCmle · J~ncJ~ora§e, Al, skc, 99503 '~ (907) 276-1361 Conclusions: 1. The field probably has been receiving approximately 1000 gallons per day for the past 2-3 week. It appears to be working properly at this time. Within one to two weeks the excess water in the field should drain. If the field doesn't dry out within that time then it will be fairly evident that the muddy water has clogged the soils. The drain field will then have to be replaced. 2. The well meets the Municipal Construction Standards. water is safe from harmful bacteria. A copy of the test is attached. The 3. All capped standpipes are in place. Recommendation: The Health Authority, be issued with the provision that the field be rebuilt if it doesn't operate properly. ALASKA eFIUIROF1FI1E FITAL COF1TROL $t RUICeS, IFIC. ~n§JneeeJnq 6 I~nuironmenlal $1udJcs June 29, 1982 Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health & ]~nvironmental Protection 825 L. Street Anchorage, Ak. 99501 Attn: Robert Pratt Dear Bob: On June 29, 1982, Chris Fejes had Fred Mastel dig a test hole alongside the sewer system located in Mann Subdivision Block 5 Lot 4. During the test Dave Connors and I were there to observe. The septic rock still contained water but it was relatively clear. The native gravel alongside the trench was not plugged with silt. In addition we dug another test hole at the end of the system. The natural sands and gravels were damp but did not contain water. The bottom of the distribution pipe was clean. I believe the original diagnosis was correct. The field has been subject to severe flooding. The water being pumped into the bed did not plug the soils. I believe the system has not been damaged by the extreme flooding. Therefore I recommend that the health authority be issued.
