The homeowner contacted us and requested us to prepare a design for a new tank & reserve drainfield. We are proposing to decommission the existing septic tank per UPC and install a new 1500 -gallon HDPE Greer tank (oversized) and a dual shallow trench type drainfield. Per MOA records, six (6) "testholes" were excavated on the lot and we are proposing to construct the drainfield adjacent to "teshtoles" #5 and #6. It should be noted that testholes #4, #5 and #6 appear to only be "benches" for the percolation tests. It appears the reserve site was initially approved from the data provided for Testholes #1, #2 and #3. We are proposing to do a confirmation test hole (to visually confirm soil conditions and vertical separation to bedrock & groundwater), at thelocation shown on the attached design drawing, prior to installing the new trenches. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Per the soil logs in MOA records by Toben Spurkland, PE, testhole #5 and testhole #6 had percolation rates of 5 min/inch and 10 min/inch. We are proposing an application rate of 0.8 (6-15 min/inch), which is conservative. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: The drainfield is being installed on slopes that are greater than 25% but less than 45%. We are appealing to the "steep slope provision" in the onsite wastewater code which allows for a shallow trench to be installed on slopes greater than 25% but less than 45%, if sand is installed that extends 3 feet below original grade, on the downhill side of the trench. We are proposing three feet of sand to meet this provision. In short, although the trench is installed on a steeper slope (greater than 25%), it still meets MOA code requirements.
