The attached site plan identifies the location of the home as well as the proposed septic location and alternate site. No conflicts exist between this proposed system and any other well or septic system, whether on this lot or adjacent lots. The ground surface on the slopes to the northwest. It is pretty flat in the center but toward the northeast corner of the lot it gets much steeper. The septic system will be located near the center of the lot where there are no slopes greater than 25% within 50 feet downslope of either the primary or alternate site. Contours are shown on the site plan showing the grade and direction of flow. Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic system. The new trench will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible. Our test hole on the lot found soils that perked under 1 min/in and were visually rated as GP, Poorly Graded Gravel (above a layer which seemed sandy). We initially designed a shallow trench with 2' of filter sand below to provide additional treatment. However, during excavation and preparation of the home foundation, we saw that this sand layer was very extensive and completely covered the south portion of the property. We took a sample to the lab, which classified it as SP, Poorly Graded Sand with Gravel, with 50% of it qualifying as sand. This SP layer would be adequate to build a deep trench in without using a sand filter. Since our test hole noted at least 6' of this sand below the GP layer, and the excavation of the house confirmed the material in the test hole, we are proposing that this layer be allowed to be used in lieu of a sand filter. While normally a sand filter requires a shallow trench, since the sidewalls would bypass the filter, with the extensive sand below a deep trench design would still work, as any effluent would pass through this filter layer and receive the needed additional treatment. We are still proposing using an application rate of 1.0, appropriate for gravel with a sand filter below. Wells on this and adjacent lots are shown. The new system will be a minimum of 100' from all wells and surface water, and more than 5' away from the septic tank. The alternate site is located more than 6' away. Please refer to the attached test hole log, plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this design is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.
