Subject: Soil Investigation for Sanitary SeWer System, Lot 10, Block A, Knik
Heights Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska
Dear Mr. Giessel :
At your request of August 6, 1979, we conducted a subsurface soils investi-
gation at the proposed location of the sanitary sewer system on the subject
lot. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the
Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection.
This investigation, which was accomplished on August 6, 1979, consisted of a
test pit excavated to a depth of 16 feet below the existing ground surface.
The test hole was sited according to your instructions and its location is
shown in attached Drawing A-01. Excavation was accomplished with a backhoe.
Samples were taken at the depths shown on the soils log in Drawing A-01. The
samples will be held in storage at our lab for approximately six months. In
addition, all material excavated was continuously monitored by an experienced
geotechnical engineer.
The topography at the excavation site is generally gently-sloping to the
west-southwest. At the time of the investigation the site had original
vegetation consisting of large birch and spruce trees. The top of the test
pit was located at original ground surface.
The soils encountered in the excavation are shown in the test hole log in
Drawing A-01. This log displays specific conditions encountered at the test
location. However, subsurface conditions may vary in other parts of the lot
without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not
encountered and bedrock was not encountered. At the time the hole was
excavated seasonal frost was not present and permafrost was not encountered.
Two percolation tests were performed~es in pits
adjoining Test Pit #1 at a depth of~threeone half fee~.X_xThus, the
percolation occurred in sandy gravel ~trata located tree one half to
five feet below the surface. Both holes were filled with three gallons of
Page -2-
water. The measured percolation rates were 10.9 and 13.3 minutes per inch
fov test one and two respectively.
We appreciated this opportunity to be of service to you. Please contact us
if you have any questions concerning this letter or if we can be of addi-
tional service.
Very truly yours,

Dear Mr. Pratt:
I received your letter of December 14. Enclosed find the
drinking water analysis report.
In response to your statement that my sewer line was broken,
please note that the municipality approved a dual drain
system for my house. My sewer line is intact. The water,
not sewage, which is surfacing near the end of the driveway
comes from the second drain system. This second system
carries water from garage and basement floor drains as well
as perforated pipe buried around the base of my foundations.
I hope this answers your questions.
Yours truly,
Richard S. Giessel
