This system is composed of an original crib type absorption system, and an upgraded trench. The documentation is not clear, but it appears that the trench was intended to be a spill-over from the crib. GEG completed an adequacy test on the crib system on 9/9/12, during which the crib was determined to be technically failed. The sump at the end of the trench had been compromised and needed to be repaired before an adequacy test could be performed on the trench. The owner proceeded to have the sump repaired. Shortly after, Anchorage experienced an unusual relentless rain event. During this event, the owner experienced water sheeting across his back yard, which temporarily ponded in a small depression around the top of the crib. Per the owner, the water appeared to be absorbing into the ground. The owner (principle scientist with Alaska Environmental) observed flooding of the crib, tank, and trench. The system however did not overflow or discharge any sewage onto the ground surface. After the rain event, the home owner closely monitored the system, and several other septic systems in the neighborhood that had also experienced surcharging, while communicating with GEG. The liquid levels subsided to normal operating levels over the next few weeks. At that time, the decision was made by the homeowner to give the system more time to recover from the overloading before GEG was to run an adequacy test. GEG returned on 11/16/12 to run an adequacy test. The drainfield passed the adequacy test at that time. The problem area around the crib standpipe, that held the ponded water, is a 5'x5' area that appears to be approximately 3" lower in elevation than the surrounding grade. With the exception of this area, the yard appears to have fairly decent drainage. The owner was able to obtain soil which was thawed out in his garage, mixed with top soil, and mounded in the problematic location around the stand pipe. It appears that this fill will sufficiently prevent water from ponding around the crib area. It is unknown whether the system was influenced solely from water intrusion from the surface, or whether a temporary, higher than usual, groundwater table was also a factor.
