To whom it may concern, The subject lot is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system was installed in 1973 and received approval from the M.O.A. Department of Health and Environmental Protection on 2/18/1981. Two reports were issued by Alaska Development Consultants (signed by Stephen D. Shrader, P.E.) during this process which is the only source of information regarding the dimensions, size, type or configuration of the system. The data on our C.O.S.A. paperwork is based upon the information from these reports. The effective depth and total absorption area are unknown. Although we cannot confirm that the system has proper absorption area for a 6 bedroom system, the system passed a 6 bedroom adequacy test and was previously approved as a 6 bedroom system by the department. Based upon this, we request that the system be approved in its current configuration. Note: The highest liquid level during our adequacy test was 24 inches below the top of the seepage pit If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. Dear Sir; Pursuant to your phone call last Friday, I have measured the tank on the pump truck which pumped your septic tank on February 5, 1981. The pump truck is owned and operated by Alaska NW Pumping. The two compartment tank measures 6.5 feet in diameter and 15.4 feet in length. One compartment was totally filled in the presence of our technician, Mr. Mike Heinz, who performed the adequacy test on your septic system. The volume of the single compartment is computed as follows: I Vol. = length x area = (6.51)2 x 1524 = 255.5 ft = 1911 gallons The septic tank has a liquid capacity of at least 1911 gallons. However, the septic tank had a liquid depth prior to pumping of 5.2 feet and a liquid depth after pumping of 3.1 feet. If a rectangular or square tank is assumed, the total liquid capacity of the tank can be computed as follows: I 5.2' 5-21' x Total liquid capacity, gallons = 1911 gallons Total liquid capacity = 4732 gallons. Mr. Keith Wellborn February 11, 1981 Page -2- For a circular septic tank of an assumed 6 -foot diameter, the total liquid capacity is computed to be 4404 gallons. In accordance with Municipal requirements and telephone conversation with the Department of Health and Environmental Conservation, the required septic tank liquid capacity for a 6 -bedroom residence is 1750 gallons (1000 gallons plus 250 gallon/bedroom for each bed- room in excess of 3 bedrooms). In accordance with the U.S.P.H.S. Manual of Septic -Tank Practice, the liquid capacity of a septic tank should be 1; day's sewage flow or 12 x 900 gpd = 1350 gallons. Since 1911 gallons were pumped from your septic tank and the total liquid capacity of the tank appears to exceed 4000 gallons, depending on the actual cross-section and dimension of the septic tank, the liquid capacity of the septic tank appears tobe more than adequate. Existing Septic System on Lot 1D, Nettleton Acres Subdivision Unit #2. Dear Sir: At your request our office conducted a percolation adequacy test on your existing septic system at the above -referenced location during the period February 3 - 5, 1981. The Munici- pality's Department of Health and Environmental Protection have no records of your septic system. The components of your septic system are the septic tank and a drain field. The septic tank has a liquid capacity of at least 2000 gallons, determined by pumping the taiik at the completion of the adequacy test. The 11 -foot depth at the drain field stand pipe, coupled with the fact that 1000 gallons were added with only a 0.3 -foot rise in liquid level, indicates that the drain field is a seepage pit. The septic tank had not been pumped prior to the percolation test. Since the 6 -bedroom duplex had been occupied up to the time of the test, a normal degree of saturation within the leach field is assumed. In accordance with the Anchorage Municipal Code, Chapter 15.65, Waste Water. Disposal Regulations, any on-site sewage disposal system "shall have adequate capacity to properly dispose of the maximum daily sewage flow." The maximum daily flow is computed at 75 gallons per capita -day (gcpd). Since "the population of dwellings shall be estimated at two persons per sleeping room," the maximum daily sewage flow for your 6 -bedroom duplex is 900 gallons per. day (gpd). To test the soil absorption capacity as well as the surge capability of your system, approximately 110 percent of the maxi- mum daily flow or 1000 gallons of clear water was added in 50 - gallon increments to the seepage pit. The water was ohtained from your on-site private well at its maximum sustained rate of about 4 gallons per minute (gpm). The liquid levels were monitored closely to detect any backup in the septic system. Mr. Keith Wellborn February 5, 1981 Page -2- The attached Table of Test Data represents the depths of liquid in the septic tank and seepage pit, and the quan- tities of water added. The septic tank was determined to be 8.4 feet deep (bottom of tank to ground surface) with an initial depth of 5.2 feet in the tank. The seepage pit was measured to be 11.2 feet deep with an initial depth of 4.75 feet. Ground elevation at the septic tank standpipe is approximately 5.8 feet above ground elevation at the seepage pit standpipe. The attached Summary of Test Results indicates that the liquid level in the seepage pit at the beginning of testing on Day 2 fell to 0.05 feet below its initial static level on Day 1, during a recovery period of 2.4 hours. On Day 3, the level had fallen to 1.2 feet below its static level on Day 2, during a recovery period of 24 hours. The level in the seepage pit at its highest level during the test (5.2 feet) was approximately 8.5 feet below the liquid level in the septic tank. Based on two days of testing, an average percolation rate for your existing septic system of approximately 1,000 gpd is indicated. Since an on-site sewage disposal system for a 6 -bedroom dwelling must be capable of disposing of 900 gallons of sewage per day, your septic system appears to be functioning satisfactorily at this time. Many factors affect the operation of a soil absorption type of sewage disposal. system. Soil type, groundwater depth, age and history of maintenance of the system, and types of waste are a few. This test has been performed in an attempt to determine actual soil absorption capabilities of your septic system under normal useage by considering the degree of saturation of the leach field and surge loads that might be imposed on the system. This test can only evaluate appar- ent performance at a given point in time, and cannot deter- mine either the condition of the leach field, seepage pit or other components of the septic system, or the depth of the water table. We appreciate the opportunity given to perform this adequacy test. If you have any questions regarding this test, please contact this office.
