Subject: Subsurface Investigation for Suitability for
On-Site Sewage Disposal, Rockhill Acres
Gentlemen:
At your request we have conducted a series of percolation tests
in borings drilled in May, 1978, in Rockhi!l Acres. Rock~ill
Acres is located off Abbott Road in the lower hillside area
of Anchorage, Alaska as shown on the vicinity map, Figure 1.
On February 26, 1979 we submitted to you the test logs of the
nineteen test borings drilled during the May 1978 program~ along
with laboratory test results. After the borings were drilled
a 3/4" slotted .PVC pipe was inserted into each hole t:o keep
the hole open in case of caving and to aid in measuring th~ free
water level. However, percolation tests were not conducted at
that time.
Recently, we have attempted to locate those borings; however,
-heavy. snow cover obscured the boring locations and we were
only able to locate six. The PVC pipes were checked, to
confirm that no plugging had occurred The pipes were then
filled with water and left over night to saturate. On
returning the next day the pipes were refilled and the
change of water level carefully monitored over the next 60
minutes. Rates reported on the following p~ge represent the
slowest percolation rate observed during the 60 minute observation.

Page Two ~
It is our opinion that on-site wastewater disposal systems may~
be constructed on all lots in this subdivision in conformance
with Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Public Health
and Environmental Protection regulations. Table 2 lists the
observed percolation rates and ~~_~._rates for those
lots on which percolation tests were not condUcted~ ~h9
~s~imat~ percolation rates were determined by comparing
soli ty~%s and terrain feat~__ures wi__th are__as wh_~r~ percolation
te-~s were conduc e~.' We feel confident that the values are
generally cOnservative. It may be possible to lower the
design percolation value on some lots by actually placing a
test hole and running a percolation test on that specific
lot. If the testing can shorten the required absorption
terrain by a length of 10 to 15 feet it may save the cost of
the test in reduced construction costs.
Ail seepage pit, leech field, absorption trench excavations
should be inspected prior to backfilling to assure that
actual soil conditions do not vary substantially from those
assumed in our analys~s.
The nineteen test borings, drilled in May~ ].978, were drilled
· with a solid flight auger rig, is owned by Denali Drilling
Co., Inc. The drilling was supervised and the test holes
logged by Mr. O.M. Hatch, Alaska Testlab senior Geologist.
As samples were recovered, the test holes were logged and
the soils visually classified. Samples were then sealed in
plastic bags to protect the natural moisture content.
In the laboratory, the moisture content and dry strength of
each sample was determined. Samples of similar color,
texture, particle size distribution were grouped together
and given an arbitrary group designation. Grain size
analysis was then performed on composite samples of important
groups rather than on the individual samples. The general
soil types encountered on this project are listed in Table 3
by their group designation.
Supplementing this subsurface information, we have used the
test pit logs from a preliminary investigation by Lounsbury
and Associates° The location of these test pits and our
test boring locations are shown on the'plot plan attached to
this report in an envelope.
Soils generally consist of silty sands and gravel. One
boring did encounter relatively clean gravel and several
borings'encountered sandy silt. No ground water was encountered.

Page Three
In an area that was used for a gravel barrow pit, significant
quantities of unclassified fill has been placed during or
prior to regrading operations. This fill'was placed without
proper compaction controls and contains organics, garbage,
and other unsuitable material in some areas. We strongly
recommend that a foundation investigation be conducted on
each lot in Block 2 prior to construction of residential
structures. We also recommend that additional information
be obtained prior to construction of Main Tree Drive and
Platinum Circle.

Test Hole Lo9 - Description Guide
The soil descriptions showtt on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field exantination.
The logs often include the following items:
Depth Interval - usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant change in soil type was ob~rved through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, FI, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil CLassification
Chart"
Texture .f Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
s~ze and !.~oportion, see "Soil CLassification Chart", note the
proportio.s are approximate and m.difications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusious and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content ~. this is a qualitative measure:
d.~z, .o or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, often soft, if cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free draining soil;
diDtcnt at nat~.ra! moisture conte.t, if a ~.~n-plasHc silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further definedby reference to PI,
LW, NP, M% or dilatency.)
Density - refers to more-or-less non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
r.~silt groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-318", Shelby tube Y', auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-SO hollow stem) 6"-8", Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drilling and arc referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders.8"+. Therefore when reviewing the gradation sheets, if any,
the description on thi~ hole log must be considered for an"indication of
larger particles,
Unified Soil Classification - This is a two letter code. See Unified
C-I~ ~'cT;:~'~her definition. In some cases AASHO aud/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
PI; natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
I~nits
L_._~i natural moisture' content believed to be greater than liquid limit
· N~P; non-pLastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty
mat~siaLa.
Dilatencv - is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
saturated or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrated or johed - used
as an aid to determine if a fine grained soil is a slig}ttly or non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour - finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
similar ~o a clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
~ p~ such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil, Quantity described as; trace, or au estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
hsufil]y occuring: below a peat deposit.
Amorphus peat -- organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Testhole - mcludes last satople interval·
Frost Line - seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground - other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, used only in
special cases.
Blow/6:' - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12' advance is.
by definition, the standard penetration.
M% - natural moisture contettt of the soil sample, usually not
performed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
Type of Sample -
SP, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
S, thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
G, "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or wall of trench,
~ cut sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry, Strep t~ -- a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, H=High
Group - The samples are placed into apparently sintilar groups based
on color and texture and are arbitrarily assigned a group letter. Further
disturbed tests including Atterberg Limits, grain size, moisture4ensity
relationship, etc. Inay be performed on tbe group and are assumed to
reflect thc general distrubed characteristics of the soils assigned to the
group. This is an intportant phase of the soil analysis and is used to
standardize the various qualitative determination, and to reduce the
number of quantitative test.~ necessary to describe the soil ma~s.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation for Suitability for
On-~i'te Sewage Disposal, Rockhill ~
Gentlemen:
At your request we have conducted a series of percolation tests
in borings drilled in May, 1978, in Rockhill Acres. Rockhill
Acres ].s located off Abbott Road in the lower hillslde area
of Anchorage, Alaska as shown on the vicinity map, Figure 1.
On February 26, 1979 we submitted to you the test logs of the
nineteen test borings drilled during the May 1978 program, along
with laboratory test results. After the borings were drill~
a 3/4" slotted PVC pipe was inserted into each hole to keep
the hole open in case of caving and to aid in measuring' the free
water level. However, percolation tests were not conducted at
that time.
Recently, we have attempted to locate those borings; however,
· heavy, snow cover obscured the boring locations and we were
only able to locate six.

Page Two
It is our opinion that on-site wastewater disposal systems may
be constructed on all lots in this subdivision in conformance
with Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Public Health
and Environmental Protection regulations. Table 2 lists the
observed percolation rates and estimated rates for those
lots on which percolation tests were not conducted. The
estimated percolation rates were determined by comparing
soil types and terrain features with areas where percolation
tests were conducted. We feel confident that the values are
generally conservative. It may be possible to lower the
design percolation value on some lots by actually placing a
test hole and running a percolation test on that specific
lot. If the testing can shorten the required absorption
terrain by a length of 10 to 15 feet it may save the cost of
the test in reduced construction costs.
Ail seepage pit, leech field, absorption trench excavations
should be inspected prior to backfilling to assure that
actual soil conditions do not vary substantially from those
assumed in our analysis.
The nineteen test borings, drilled in May, 1978~ were drilled
with a solid flight auger rig, is owned by Denali Drilling
Supplementing this subsurface information, we have used the
test pit logs from a preliminary investigation by Lounsbury
and Associates. The location of these test pits and our
test boring locations are shown on the plot plan attached to
this report in an envelope.
Soils generally consist of silty sands and gravel. One
boring did encounter relatively clean gravel and several
borings'encountered sandy silt. No ground water was encountered.

In an area that was used for a gravel barrow pit, significant
quantities of unclassified fill has been placed during or
prior to regrading operations. This fill'was placed without
proper compaction controls and contains organics, garbage,
and other unsuitable material in some areas. We strongly
recommend that a foundation investigation be conducted on
each lot in Block 2 prior to construction of residential
structures. We also recommend that additional information
be obtained prior to construction of Main Tree Drive and
Platinum Circle.

Test Hole Lo9 - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the h,gs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples.
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination,
The logs often include thc following items:
lnterval - usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
~nt ~ge in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, FI, F2. F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion~ see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
· proportions are approximate and modifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content .. this is a qualitative measure:
d.~/., .o ut little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, often soft~ if cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, if a free draining soil;
di!ate~t at .~tt!ral moisture conte~r, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further definedby reference to PI,
LW, NP, M%or dilatency.)
Density -~ refers to more-or-less non-cohesive soils, sucb as sand gravel
mixtures with or witbout a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data: usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
i' e c~!ay-silt groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data. Ver7
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - Thc largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-50 hollow stem) 6"-8", Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, Y' to $", or
boulders.8"+. Therefore when reviewing the gradation sheets, if any,
· the description on thi~ hole log must be considered for anqndication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification - This is a two letter code, See Unified
Classification sheet for further definition. In some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
Pl; natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
]~nits
L..._~; natural moisturg: content believed to be greater than liquid limit
. N_~P; non-plastic, useful as a modifying description of some ~ilty
materials.
Dilatencv - is the ability of water to migrate to the ~urface of a
saturated.or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrgted or jolted -- used
as an uid to determine if a fine grained soil is ~ slightly or non.pl~stic
silt or a volcanic ash,
Rock flour -- finely ground soft that is not plastic but otherwise appears
similar i.o a clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil, Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This ~nay include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck -- a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usu~.lly occuring: below a peat deposit,
Amorphus peat -- organic particles nearly or fully disiutegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-ordess intact.
Bottom of Testhole - includes last sample interval.
Frost Line - s~asonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground - other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, nscd only in
special cases.
Blow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard penetration.
,,,1% - natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
l~elformed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
Type of Sample --
S__P, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
S, tbin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine graine8 soil,
G, "grab" disturbed sample from auger fligbts or wall of trench,
(2, cot sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry..Strength - a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, H=High
- The samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
or and texture and are arbitrarily assigned a group letter. Further
disturbed tests including Atterberg Limits, grain size, moisture~tensity
relationstnp, etc. may be performed ou the group and are assumed to
reflect the general distrubed characteristics of the soils assigned to the
group. This is an inlportant pbase of the soil analysis attd is used to
standardize the various qualitative determinations and to reduce the
number'of quantitative tests necessary to describe the soil mass,

Gentlemen:
Attached are the logs of nineteen (19) test holes drilled in
~.ockhill Acres during May 1978 under the supervision of Alaska
Testlabs.
It may prove helpful in interpreting the data on the test hole
logs to review the Standard Explanatory Information contained
on sheets seven (7) through nine (9).
Laboratory analysis was perfcrmed on ali. major soil typed
encountered. Gradations for those soils are enclosed on sheets
one (1) through six (6).
If 'there are any questions, please feel free to contact us.
