Septic System Design
Impacts to Adjacent Properties

Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The septic tank on the subject project has collapsed and must be replaced.
We are therefore applying for a permit to replace the two septic tanks
currently in place with a new 1,250 gallon septic tank. The new tank will
be 80' from the existing well so a separation distance waiver is required.
The waiver request is attached to this package.
The existing septic system is composed of a 1,000 gallon septic tank and
a 500 gallon tank connected in series. The tanks flow into a 10' X 10'
absorption crib. An absorption trench extends out of the crib to the north.
The absorption system is working well at this time and does not require
an upgrade. ..~
The attached Site Plan delineates the location of the existing system and
· the proposed upgrade. The ground slopes at a 'gradual 2% to 5% from
northeast to southwest in the area of the upgrade and will not adversely
affect the new construction. If the system is constructed as designed the
following statements apply:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future. A
separation distance waiver is required to the well on the lot
however.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in
the future.

Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The existing 1,000 gallon septic tank 'serving the home on Lot 9, Block 3,
Rolling Hills View Estates Subdivision has collapsed and must be replaced.
We are proposing to place the new tank at or near the same location of the
collapsed tank as the absorption crib is currently functioning in
conformance with all Municipal requirements and placing the tank at a
location more than 100' from the existing well would be very disruptive to
the property and result in a major project. We are therefore requesting a
waiver of the 100' separation distance between the septic tank and the well
to a distance of 80'.
The septic system was originally constructed in 1967 and upgraded in
August of 1975 and consists of two septic tanks of 1,000 gallon and 500
gallon volumes. The tanks flow into an absorption crib with approximate
dimensions of 10' X 10'. The exact location and dimensions of the crib are
unknown. An absortion trench 16' in length exits the crib to the northwest.
The absorption crib and trench 'are constructed in soils rated at 125 square
feet per bedroom. No groundwater was noted in the area of the septic
system nor in any of the excavated areas near the tanks.
The system was upgraded with a permit issued by the Municipality in 1975.
An inspection report completed by the Municipality in August of 1975 states
the distance from the septic tank to the well is 75'. Regulations in effect
at the time required a separation distance of 100'. The old tank was
required to be. 50' from the well since it was constructed in 1967.

No evidence of a waiver could be found in the files, but some correspondence
is in the file concerning the construction of the well. The
separation distance between the well and the septic tank does not appear to
be a problem as several Health Authority Approvals were issued over the
years regarding the well and septic system. All. water quality tests taken
since 1975 appear to indicate satisfactory levels of coliform, bacteria and
nitrate content.
The well is located in the garage under the concrete slab. No log is
available on the well, but documentation indicates it is 132' deep. It is
cased to the bottom according to the owner of the property. A recent water
sample taken from the system indicates the water is free of coliform and
other bacteria with less than 1 mg/L of nitrate content. No contamination
is resulting from the septic system. The static water level on the well s
12' below the surface.
Other wells in the area were checked for static water levels and found to be
from 12.7' below the surface to 58.7'. The groundslope in the area is from
northeast to southwest. Based on this information it is difficult to
determine the hydraulic gradient. The attached Area Map shows the location
and static water levels of several of the wells in the subdivision. It also
shows the major drainage pattern in the area.
The overwhelming argument for allowing the waiver is the lack of
contamination in the well water. The septic tank has been within 75' of the
well since it was first constructed. No contamination has been noted during
that time. We are therefore confident contamination will not result if the
new tank is placed an additional 5' from the well for a total of 80'.
Previous conversations with Mr. Jim Cross indicated the waiver of the
separation distance was a good possibility. We agree with this assessment
and request your approval of our waiver request.

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter constitutes a waiver regarding the well
located on Lot 9, Block 3~ Rolling Hills View Estates sub-
division in Eagle River. This property is currently in the
name of J. Daid and Theresa A. Benson; however, this same
property has been sold to Dwayne L. and Christine L. Ander-
son.
During the course of a recent water sample collection
procedure, Mr. Fred Beatty of your offices, stated in his
report that ~a 12" extension pipe with a sanitary cap would
be required for placement on top of the existing well.
This well is located within the attached garage of the
property in question. The well top is capped and cemented
over at garage floor level. The possibility of foreign
materials falling into the well casing is extremely remote.
If Mr. Beatty's identified requirement is enforced by your
offices, vehicle access to the heated garage is eliminated,
since the 12" extension will then block an automobile from
entry.
There is now adequate protection of the well casing
as previously mentioned. Based upon this information, it is
therefore requested that waiver of Mr. Beatty's finding be
approved.
