SPECIFICATIONS & DESIGN GUIDELINES
Wastewater System Sizing: This is a new 4-bedroom, single family home. A wastewater
disposal permit was previously issued in 1993; SW930185. This is basically the same
design, using the previous test hole. The water well was drilled under the previous
permit. This is a partially developed subdivision. A new trench is planned + new 1500
gallon septic tank. No adverse impacts are expected from trench/tank construction. No
conflicts to the other lots will take place by this septic system construction. A previous
soil test reveals predominately sandy material. An application rate of 1.2 GPD/FT².
Trench Length = 500 FT²/5 x (0.5 reduction factor) = 50 trench, 4 effective. A new
1500 gallon septic tank will be installed; Easements depicted in the area, private water
wells serve subdivision lots. 11 trench depth. Groundwater was monitored throughout
the summer 2025- the 17-foot deep test hole showed no groundwater. A new test hole can
be evaluated prior to construction to confirm the soils. Neighboring Lot 11 TH is very
similar, within the same geomorphologic bench, exhibiting similar perk/soils.
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the
Municipality of Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water
Regulations and Wastewater Regulations.
Two compartment, New 1500 gallon septic tank. Install Double Cleanouts. MOA-
Spec Material Under Tank.
10 minimum between the tank trench, tank to house.
3 of cover or insulation is required for trench; 2 Minimum thickness for insulation
can substitute for 1 cover.
Tank & solid pipe must be set on well compacted, stable soil.
4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required 1 to 4 from foundation
wall, prior to any 90 degree bend in 4 inch line, in each tank compartment, and two
adjacent opposing cleanouts between the tank and the absorption field, not more than
10 from the tank positioned to provide cleanout access towards the tank and towards
the absorption field.
All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
Trench to be placed level, minimum of 4 to groundwater, 6 to bedrock from drain-
rock.
Drain rock to be ½ to 2 screened, distributed uniformly throughout the trench.
Perforated pipe to be installed level with perforations down.
Silt barrier (filter fabric) to be installed above the drain rock.
Smeared trench sides must be raked or scarified before drain rock placement.
The finish grade must be mounded to promote drainage away from trench.
Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789,
ABS ASTM D2661,
Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.
Insulation board to be extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Styrofoam HI/equal)

SOILS DISCUSSION
Lot 14 soils log was completed in 1993 by Hank Wilson, PE. Hank described the soils
below 7-foot depth as suitable for a septic system absorption field. These soils are
identified as gravel and sand, with varying amounts of silt. The soils were broken into
varying layers, although very similar; the perk test revealed a very favorable rate of 2.7
minutes/inch.
Lot 11, right across the street, is at a similar elevation. Lot 11 soils are described as
similar, but not broken out into layers. It is likely that these soils in this vicinity vary
slightly, but with similar properties. The Lot 11 soils log demonstrates a similar perk rate
of 3.1 minutes/inch (attached).
Lot 11 soils log is exceptionally deep at 24-feet. No groundwater was encountered,
similar to the Lot 14 soils log. The Lot 14 monitor tube is in place; it has been monitored
periodically this summer, with no groundwater evident.
It is my opinion that the Lot 14 soils are collectively similar below 7-feet, and will reflect
the perk test results by Hank Wilson. If other soils are encountered during construction,
an alternate design could be formulated.

SCOPE OF PROJECT: New proposed absorption field is designed for a
bedroom system. Lot is to be served by private well to be developed on
ABSORPTION AREA C~tLCULATIONS:
Minimum Required: 4 Bedrooms x 150gpd/bedroom = 600 gpd capacity
Soils rating, proposed addition, 1.2 gpd/sf
Minimum sizing: 600 gpd % 1.2 gpd/sf = 500 sf absorption area
Due to depth of useable soil, Use wide trench design:
500 sf % 5' W = 100 sfx Correction factor [(W+2)4(W+l+2D)] = 100 sf x [(5+2)
= 50' minimum trench length, 5'wide x 4'~de~p

site.
IMPACT ON ADJACENT LOTS: There are no private wells within 100' of this
proposed absorption system. This proposed absorption system has minimal
impact to Lots 8 and 15 by restrictihg the areas available for well
installation.
