Dear Mr. Daily: At your request our office conducted a percolation adequacy test on your existing septic system at the above-referenced location during the period January 24-25, 1979. You reported that your septic system consists of a septic tank and a 12' X 12' log crib seepage pit. The 2-bedroom house was occupied up to and including the time of the test, however, since the septic tank and seepage pit were both pumped on Monday, January 22, 1979, the degree of saturation within the leach field is uncertain. In an attempt to restore the leach field to a normal degree of saturation prior to performing the test, we requested that you add water to the system by leaving the taps on in the house. You reported that this was done. To test the soil absorption capacity of your system, 110 percent of the maximum daily flow or 330 gallons of clear water was added in 50-gallon increments to your system. The water was obtained from your on-site private well. The liquid levels were monitored closely to detect any backup in the system. The attached Table of Test Data represents the depths of liquid in the septic tank and seepage pit, and the quantities of water added. The septic tank was determined to be 9..6 feet deep (bottom of tank to ground surface) with an initial depth of 5.3 feet in the tank. The seepage pit was determined to be 10.5 feet deep ~{~'~-~-~-~initial de~h,.o~.~_~_~ Ground elevation at the septic tank and seepage pit standpipes is level. Mr. Daily January 26, 1979 Page -2- The Table of Test Data shows that the liquid level in the seepage pit on the second day increased 0.4 feet above its initial static level at the beginning of the test, during a recovery period of 22 hours. Based on the above-described procedure and results, we are unable to determine that your septic system is functioning properly at this time. The possibility does exist that the normal operating depth in your seepage pit has not been re-established, and that your system may percolate satis- factorily at the normal operating depth. This cannot be determined without additional testing after allowing several days for the system to recover to its normal operating condition. Many factors affect the operation of a soil absorption type of sewage disposal system. Soil type, groundwater depth, age and history of maintenance of the system, and types of waste are a few. This test has been performed in an attempt to model: actual soil absorption capabilities of your septic system under normal useage by considering the degree of saturation of the leach field and surge loads that might be imposed on the system. This test can only evaluate apparent performance of the system at a given point in time, and cannot determine either the condition of the leach field, seepage pit or other components of the septic system, or the depth of the water table. We appreciate the opportunity given to perform this adequacy test. If you have any questions regarding this test, please contact this office.
