RE: Subsurface Investigation For Feasibility of On-site Sewer
Lot 2, Block 6, 0brien Subdivision
Dear Mr. Williams:
We were requested by Ms. Chris Braunen, with Tanner-Magowan Realtors,
to perform a subsurface investigation on the above referenced
lot, to determine the site's suitability for acceptance of an
on-site sewage disposal system.
A test hole was placed approximately 40 feet south of the north
property line, and 20 feet west of the east property line on
Wednesday, October 1, 1975. The hole was placed utilizing a
Mobile Drill B-50 drill rig mounted on a truck. The rig was
owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. and the test holes
were logged and the drilling supervised by Mr. O.M. Hatch, staff
geologist/senior technician, with Alaska Testlab.
The log of the test hole is included in.this report as Table
A. It will prove helpful to read the Standard Explanatory Informa-
tion in the back of this report to help interpret, the data on
the test hole log.
After the hole was drilled, it was filled with water and left
over night to saturate. The next afternoon, the hole was again
filled with water to within 3 feet of the surface and left to
percolate for 1 hour. The water level fell a total of 17 inches
in 60 minutes for a percolation rate of' 3.5 minutes per inch.
Utilizing the data published in Table A, "Absorbtion Area Requirements
for Individual Residences" on page' 8, of the "Manual of Septic
Tank Practice", published by the U.S. Department of Health, Education
and Welfare. The required area of a seepage pit p~aced in the
soils detected by the test hole is 110 square feet per bedroom.
No water table was detected during exploration for the full 20
foot depth of the test hole. It should be noted though, that
the water table will fluctuate with seasonal and climatic changes.
We hope this is sufficient for your present needs. If we can
Mr. Alvin Williams

offer clarification on any item or be of further service, do
not hesitate to contact us.
Very truly yours,

Test Hole Log - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of thc soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following ite~ns:
Depth Interval -- usually shown to 0,1 foot, within that zone no
s~g;dficant cha;~ge in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, FI, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Textm-e of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soft Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modificatious to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content - this is a qualitative measure:
dr.~, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portfon of color, less than plastic Ii,nit,
wet, no free water, often soft, if cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, if a free draining soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, if a non pla.stic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further defined by reference to PI,
LW, NP, M%or dilatency0
Density - refers to more-ordess non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or witbout a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics·
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
~silt groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-50 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indkrectly by
action of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+, Therefore when reviewing the gradation sbeet~, if any,
the description on the hole log must be considered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification This is a two letter code. See Unified
Classification sheet for further definition. In some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unifie,d.
Atterberg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
PI; natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
]~mit s
Lw+; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
NP; non-plastic, useful :ts a modifying description of some silty
~'~at trials.
l)ilatenc¥ - is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
saturated or nearly saturated st)il salllple when vibrated or johcd used
as au aid to dctermiue il'a fmc grained soil is a slightly or non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash,
Rock flour finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
similar to a clayey silt,
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or. in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
materiah
Muck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit·
Amorpbus peat - organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Testhole - includes last sample interval.
Frost Line -- seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground other than frost line. described by samples, usually
includes description of icc content, often wdl include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrbst studies·
Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at tbe time ofdrilbng or at other
seasons. Static water table determination ill oilier th.tn very permeable
soils requires observation wells o} piezometcr installations, used only m
special cases.
Blow/6" - The number of blows ora 140 weight free falling i0" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6": ti~e number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard peuetration.
,d% - natural moisture content of thc soil sample, usually not
~formed on clean sands or gravels below the water table·
Type of Sample -
~, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
~, thin wall tube, "Sbelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil.
~. "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or w.dl ol trench,
~. cut sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry Strength a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=Noue,
L=Low,M=Medium, H=High
Group - Tbc samples are placed into app,Lrcntl~:similar grout'~bascd

To Whom it May Concern:
This letter'is to verify the
septic system on Lot 2 Blk. 6, Obrien Subdivision (7560 Lake
Otis). This information was obtained by the undersigned realtor
over the telephone ~rom Mr. Walter F. White, the builder who
originally installed the system in 1959, and Alvin Williams,
who has occupied the home for the past sixtleen years. There
have been no malfunctions of the system during Mr. Williams'
occupancy.
. Cast iron pipe connects the house to the septic tank
ThL tank is a 1000 gallon metal tank which was covered with
a heavy layer of tar at the time of insLallation. Cast iron
pipe then connects the septic tank to the four inch perforated
pipe comprising the leech field. The leech field begins 10 ft.
east of the tanR and extends approximately 55 ft. with late~als·
extending 10 ft. in' either d~rection~curing every 5 ft.
The trenches are approximately 6 ft.,deep with 2~ ft. of
gravel below the pipe~ The pipes are cowered with building
paper'and then covered with 2½ ft. of gravel. Topsoil was
~hen put in to fill the trenches.
_ Sincerely~
David Home
