Subject: Lot 3, Block 3, Robin Hills Subdivision No. 3
Septic System Design and Permit Application
Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear Onsite Services Engineer:
The existing absorption system on the subject lot has failed and must be upgraded.
We are therefore requesting a permit be issued for the upgrade of the septic system to
accommodate the three-bedroom home on the lot. The attached Site Plan and backup
documentation identify the location and configuration of the existing and proposed
septic system. The existing 1,000 Gallon Septic Tank will be pumped, crushed and
backfilled and replaced with a new 1,000 Gallon Septic Tank. The existing absorption
trench system will be left intact and tied to the new system with a flow diverter valve.
Also identified on the plans are the locations of the existing well on this and adjacent
lots and adjacent septic systems. No conflicts exist between the proposed septic
system and the wells on this or adjacent lots. Protective radii are shown to the adjacent
wells. Drainage arrows are shown indicating the current drainage patterns. The
drainage patterns will be maintained after construction.
A test hole was recently placed on the lot which indicated silty sand with a percolation
rate of 2.5 minutes per inch. This test holes indicates the optimum location for the
absorption area is at 10' below the ground. We have designed the new trench with an
application rate of 1.2 gallons per date per square foot. We are proposing to place a
38' long by 5' wide trench with a 4' effective depth. The total depth of the system will be
14'. No groundwater was found in the test hole and none noted on previous test holes
placed on this or the adjacent lot. We will continue to monitor the groundwater through
construction of the new system. Any deviations from our assumptions will result in a
redesign of the system and a change order request to the City.
The ground surface on the lot slopes slightly to the southwest in the area of the new

absorption trench. The trench will be placed parallel to the contours of the ground as
much as possible and in conformance with design criteria. A minimum of 100' will be
maintained between all components of the septic system and the proposed well and
from any surface water in the area.
If the system is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements
apply:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells
in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
2. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
4. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained.
Sincerely, n

Re: Subsurface Soil Investigation for On-site Sewage Disposal
Lot 3, Blk. 3, Robin Hills Subdivision No.3
Dear Mr. Willoughby:
As per your instructions we conducted an exploratory effort
on the above referenced lot to determine the suitability of
the subsurface soils for placement of an on-site sewage
disposal system.
This exploration was conducted August 4, 1975, utilizing a
B -50N Mobile Drill drill rig owned and operated by Denali
Drilling Inc. The test hole was located on the lot as shown
on the enclosed test hole location sketch - Figure 1. The
test hole was logged and the soil. strata visually classified
by Mr. O.M. Hatch, senior technician/staff geologist with
Alaska Testlab. Table A is the log of this test hole, while
sheets 1 through 3 contain standard explanatory information
that may be helpful in interpreting the data and nomenclature
of the test hole log.
Visually, the only layer that appears conducive to absorb
sewage effluent is the layer of silty sand encountered
between 7 1/2 and 12 1/2 feet. This layer is enclosed, both
above and below, by tight fine-grained soils. We decided,
therefore, that an actual percolation test was required in
the test hol.e.
The test hole was filled with water to within three feet of
the surface at 11:00 a.m. August 5, 1975. On returning on
August 6, 1975, at 1:30 p.m., the water was down to 12.25
feet. At this time water was again placed in the hole to a
depth of three feet and the drop in the waterlevel in the
test hole recorded over approximately 20 -minute intervals
until 5:10 p.m, that evening. During this time the percolation
rate varied from 0.46 minutes per inch to 6.25 minutes per
inch with an overall percolation rate of less than 1.5
minutes per inch.
Mr. Richard J. Willoughby
August 8, 1975
page two
Utilizing the data presented in Table A "Absorption Area
Requirements for Individual Residences" contained within
"The Manual of Septic Tank Practice", published by the U.S.
Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare, the required absorption
area per bedroom for a residence located on this site, is 85
square feet. This is for the soils from the ground surface
to 12 1/2 feet. It does not appear that the soils below 12
feet will percolate to any appreciable degree.
It should be noted that on the date of exploration no water
table was detected in the test hole. It should be note
though, that the level of a water table generally fluctuates
fairly broadly with climatic and seasonal changes, though we
do not anticipate this being a problem at the site.
We trust the foregoing is sufficient and complete to your
immediate needs. Should questions arise, or if we can be of
further service, please feel free to contact the writer.
Very truly yours,
ALASKA TES TLAB

'Test Hole Lou — Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification io the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
Depth Interval - usuallyshown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant change in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, F1, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content - this is a qualitative measure:
dry_, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, often soft, if cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, if a freC draining soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, if a non -plastic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further defined by reference to PI,
Ley, NP, M,Sor ddatency.)
Density - refers to more -or -less non -cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more -or -less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
the clay -silt groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute -man) 2", Auger flights
(A-50 hollow stein) 6"-S". Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"i-, Therefore when reviewing the gradation sheets, if any,
the description on the hole log must be considered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification - 'Phis is a two letter code. Sec Unified
Classification sheet for further definition. In some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
PI; natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
Pit; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
limits
Lw+; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
NP; non -plastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty
materials.
Dil:nency -- is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
smurtcd or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrated or jolted -- used
as all aid to determine if a fine grained soil is a slightly or non -plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour -- finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
sine ar to a clayey silt.
Organic Content -- usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi -organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorphus peat - organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more -or -less intact.
Bottom of Testhole - includes last sample interval.
Frost Line - seasonal frost depth as described by dfilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground -- other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for fiozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static eater table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, used only in
special cases,
]Slow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard penetration.
M'Xo - natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
performed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
TypeofSanhplc --
SP, refers to 2" split spoon .driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
S, thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
C, "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or wall of trench,
C, cut sarnple, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry Strength -- a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, 11-Fligh
Grou -- The samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
on color and texture and are arbiumily assigned a group letter. Further
disturbed tests including Arterberg Limits, grain size, moisture density
relationship, etc. may be performed on the group and :ire .rssuuhed to
reflect the general disuubed characteristics ul the soils assgtned to file
group. This is an important Phase of' the soil :analysis and is used to
standardize the various qualitative dewiminations and to reduce the
number of quantitative tests necessary to describe the soil mass.
