Our observation was the material placed on the tank was a gravelly sand which is porous and would not be able to retain much water or moisture. We would expect the soils are probably around 100 pounds per cubic feet as opposed to the design criteria of 120 pounds per cubic feet used in the tank design calculations. We also understand a safety factor of 2 was used in the tank design. If we may be of further service, please contact us. The result of the field investigation and adequacy test is summarized as follows: The septic system consists of a 1,250 -gallon septic tank and trench type drainfield that is 39 feet long, 2:5 feet wide, and has an effective depth of 6.5 feet. The septic system was installed in 1995/1996. We performed an adequacy test on 8/12/19. Prior to the start of the test, the Monitoring Tube (MT) had 66 inches of liquid in it (9 inches below the invert of the distribution line). Five -hundred and sixteen gallons (516) of water were introduced into the drainfield over a period 90 minutes, which caused the liquid level in the MT to rise 12 inches, to a total depth of 78 inches (3 inches above the invert of the distribution line). Over the recovery period of 165 minutes, the liquid level in the MT dropped 3 inches (liquid level right at the invert of the distribution line). Although the liquid level in the drainfield did not drop below the invert of the distribution line during the recovery period, I am confident, that a later recovery reading would have indicated a liquid level below the lateral. Based upon this data and assertion, it is reasonable to believe that the absorption rate of the trench is at least 450 gallons per day. Both the septic and tank and the drainfield are approaching the end of their useful life; therefore, it is our recommendation that an advisory letter be attached with the issued COSA.
