Knowlton & Stephen J. Slote c/o Tryck, Nyman & Hayes 740 I Street Anchorage, Alaska subject: R&M No. 751199 Soil Investigation for Sanitary Sewer System, Lots 158i and 159B, K&S Subdivision, Eagle River, Alaska ~ Dear Mr. Kno~lton & Mr. Slote: At your request of July 20, 1977, we conducted a subsurface soils investigation at the proposed locations of the sanitary sewer systems on the subject lots. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection. This investigation, which was accomplished on July 22, 1977, consisted of two test holes drilled to a depth of 20' below the existing ground surface. In addition, a third test hole was drilled to a depth of 6' in the centerline of the road adjacent to Lot 159. The test holes were sited according to your instructions and their locations are shown in Drawing A-01. Test Hole #2 was drilled approximately 20 feet north of the location shown in your instructions. This change in location was made to avoid drilling into an apparent existing septic system. Drilling was accomplished with a rotary drill rig using continuous-flight solid- stem auger with an outside diameter of 6 inches. Samples were taken at the depths shown on the soils logs in Drawings A-02 and A-03. The samples will be held in storage at our lab for approximately six months. A mechanical analysis was performed on the sample obtained from beneath the road in Test Hole #3. The results are shown in Table II. In addition, all material excavated was continuously monitored by an experienced engineering geologist. The topography at the drilling site is generally horizontal. At the time of the investigation the sites at Test Holes #1 and ~3 had been stripped and filled. The site at Test Hole ~2 had original vegetation. The soils encountered in the bore hole are shown in the test hole logs in Drawings A-02 and A-03. The symbols used in Drawings A-02 and A-03 are explained in Drawings B-01 and B-02. These logs display specific conditions encountered at the test locations. However, subsurface July 27, 1.977 Mr. Knowlton & Mr. Slote: Page -2- conditions may vary in other parts of the ]qt without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not encountered in the test holes. Bedrock was not encountered. At the time the holes were drilled seasonal frost was not present. Permafrost was not encoun- tered. A percolation test was performed within Test Hole %~1, at the depth shown in the attached Table 1. All depths were measured from the top of the hole. The data in Table 1 show average infiltration from the depths indicated. At the time the perc test was performed tine hole had caved in and was filled with loose soil to a depth of 7' below the ground surface. Because of the rapid percolation rate, it was not possible to run the percolation test for an entire hour. Based on the visual classification of the soil and the requirements set forth by the Municipality of Anchorage, a percolation test was not necessary within Test Hole ~2. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you. Please contact us if you have any questions concerning this letter or if we can be of additional service. Eagle River Engineering Services P.O. Box 773294 Eagle River, Alaska 99577 Subject: Lot 158B K & S Subdivision Waiver Request, WR86-112 Dear Mr. Butera: This department has reviewed your request for a Health Authority Approval and waiver for the on-site water and sewer facilities on the subject lot. In the process of your inspection you have discovered a number of non- conformities in the well and septic system° The septic tank is located only 90 feet from the well on the subject lot and the well was found to be perforated at a depth of 33.5 feet. Both of these distance~are in violation of the 100 and 40 foot minimum distances required by Municipal code. You have noted a number of mitigating factors that lend on additional element of safety to the sewer and water facilities. An inspection of the septic tank revealed that the tank and associated coupling were in satisfactory condition. After the discovery of the perforation in the well casing a chlorinator-type disinfection system was installed which insures the quality of water supply. Given these mitigating factors, waiver to the required minimum separation distance between the well and septic tank and minimum casing depth have been granted. These waivers are valid only as long as the disinfection system remains in operation. Future approvals may require an inspection of the septic tank and disinfection system to insure that they remain in satisfactory condition and/or remain operational. Lou Butera, P.E. Eagle River Engineering Services August 25, 1986 Page Two These waivers are valid for the existing two bedroom single family dwelling only. Any enlargement of the setpic system will invalidate this waiver. Sincerely, Stephen S. Morris Civil Engineer On-site Services SSM/ljw SE ¢Yli'CES. Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519 BEF: Lot .15OB, K & S Subdivision Dear Mr. Morris: On behalf of my client, Mr. Charles Sauve, I am submitting the information necessary for your determination of a waiver of separation distance, well 'to septic tank, to 80' for the above referenced lot. The septic system absorption rate has been 'tested and found adequate for a 3 bedroom use. The leachfield was upgraded in 1980 by Steve Slote and was inspected and approved by 'the Municipality at that time, as per 'the inspection report enclosed. The on--site sewage disposal system inspection report shows the well to septic tank distance as 73~ Our field measurements confirm the tank inlet to be at 80' from the well. There is no well log, but it is estimated that the well draws from a bedrock confined aquifer at a depth of 120'. The casing should be continuous to where it is seated into bedrock. The surface 'topography is such that any seepage would be directed away from the well location toward a 10% slope to the south. The subsurface soil is a GW-GP type with a pert. rating of 100. A water sample for coliform bacteria was satisfactory. The well. is located so that the house foundation is be'tween the septic tank and well tank. Connections were excavated and photos are enclosed showing non-leaking seals. The area in question has a iow population density.
