The test hole was c].rilled by Denali Drilling, Inc., using a Nodwell mounted ~,~obile B-50 drill equipped with continuous solid f].ight aug~r. Samples were taken from the cuttings and auger bit as needed. The test hole was placed, on the 3rd of June 1975, supervised, logged and sampled by ~.r. Alan technican of our staff. A one inch diameter pJ_pe 20 feet in length was placed in the hole at the termination of drilling. Mr. t{atch (of our staff) visited the site the morning of the 4th of June 1975 in order to fill the pipe with water which is the initial step in starting a percolation test. At that time, the pipe had filled with water to the 6.1 foot level. Therefore no test could, be run. /~he~ conclusion to be dra%~n is that: since a septic tank must~-~ be placed a minimum of 4 feet above the free water table, and ~ the free ~'ater table was found to be at 6.1 feet then a septic ~ tank woula not drain if it were buried but would fill with water ~ x.~m the soil. The data for this report is as follows: Test Hole Location Sketch Test Hole Log Standard Explanatory Data Figure t Sheet 1 Sheets 2 to 4 The soils encountered in the test hole are predominantly silts which are frost susceptible. The soil from 0 to 3 feet is a frost susceptib]_e silty gravelly sand containing some peat, and from ].7 feet to 20 feet the material is a frost susceptible silty sand. Mr. Mac .~4ae]. ZJune 4, 19'/5 Page 2 The ground cover at the vicinity of the test hole is composed of grass, birch and spruce trees. Although a free water ].evel was not observed at the time of drilling, the soils frcm seven feet. down were wet to saturated and as it turned out by the next day, the water had fl'owed J_nto the hole through the soil mass to a level of 6.1 feet. Penetration S ]iT:;gSl? 2 Test Hole Log - Description Guide The soil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples, those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory' to verify the field examination. The logs often include the folk, wing items: Depth Interval usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no significant change in so~l type was observed through drill action, direct observation or sampling. Frost Classification NFS, Fl, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification Chart" Texture of Soil- An engineering classification of the soils by particle size and prtJportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the proportions ale approximate and modifications to the soil group due to stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included. Moisture Content- this is a qualitative measure: dry, no or little apparent surface moisture, damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit, wet. no free water, o fte~: ~oft, if cohesive soil, saturated, free water may. be squeezed out, ifa free draining soil; dilatent at natura[ moisture content, ifa non-plastic silt ut fi/~e sand. ('I he nioisiu;e con~ent is further defincd by reference to PI, L\V, NP, M% or df!stent2..) Density - refers to mme-ordess non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel mixtures ~ith or without a fine fraction, derived from dri]Iing action and/or samp!e data: usually, described as: very. loose, loose, medium dense, very dense. General intent is to portray, earthwork characteristics. Stiffness refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of the clay-silt groups. Derived fic. m dri!l action and/or sample data. Very soft, soft, stiff, very sti£f and hard are commonly used terms. Particle size The largest particle recovered by. thc split spoon is 1-3!8", Shelby tube 3", auger l]ights (minute.man~ 2", Auger flights (B-BO hollow stem) 6"-g". Larger pardcle= are described indirectly by action o( tile drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or boulders 8"+. Therefore when leviewing thc gradation sheets, if any, the description on the hole log must be considered for an indication of larger particles. Unified Soil Chssificadon - This is a two letter code. See Unified Classificati,m sheet for turther definition. In some cases A,'\SHO and/or FAt\ soil classifications may. be shown as well as the unified. Attcrbcrg Limits - useful for fine grained and othe~ plastic soils. P_l; natural moisture conten~ believed to be less thal~ plastic limit PI+; natural moisture content helieved to be between plastic and liquid limits natural moisture content believed to he greater than liquid hmit mm-plastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty l_)_il_.k~y_~cy' -- is tl~c ability, of water to ,high,re to tl~c surface of a slttuH~tcd or nearly saturated soil sample when vihraled orjohcd - used as an aid to detc[n~ine it' a line grained soil is a slightly or non.pLlstic sih or a volcanic ,,~b. Rock flour- finely, ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears ~ to a clay.ey silt. Organic Content - usually, described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes is~creT~= p~ such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic soil. Quantity. described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog material. Muck ~ a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits hsually occuring below a peat deposit. Amorphus peat ~ organic particles nearly, or fully disintegrated Fibrous Peat organic particles more or-less intact. Bottom ofTesthole ~ includes last sampie interval. Frost Line- seasonal flostdepthabdesc~ibed bvddHingac ona d/or ~m~ples at the time of drilling. Frozen Ground - other than frost line, described by samples, usually. includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unilied Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to permafrost studies. Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other seasons. Static water table determination iu other than very permcabl~ soils requires observation welis m piezometer iustallations, used only in special cases, Blow/6" The number of blo~s of a 140 weight free falling 30" to adwmce a 2" split spoon 6": the number o(blows for a 12" advance is, by definition, the standard penetration. ,,1~ -- natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually, not performed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
