During installation, however, the contractor was constrained by the location of the septic pipes and the limited fall, and was unable to meet these separation distances. The contractor was able to achieve a 3.3’ separation from the corner of the deck and 8.9’ separation from the building foundation. Forge was able to verify that there was no disturbance of the deck post or foundation during the excavation of the old tank. This placement is an improvement over the old tank, which was located approximately 5’ from the foundation and 3.5’ from the deck corner. The tank is not buried very deep and is mounded up in comparison to the adjacent driveway in order to get sufficient cover. The attached drawing shows the lines of influence from both the foundation and the deck post. This drawing demonstrates that the tank is located outside the soil-bearing prism of the foundation. The tank is not entirely outside the area of the post, although we do not know exactly how deep the post foundation is in the ground. The deck has been in place for at least a decade and the soils have been consolidated over that time. As there was no problem with the existing tank, we are confident that the deck will not cause problems with the new tank. Based on standard loading tables and a basic analysis of load factors, the deck post supports a maximum load of 2610lbs. At the depth at which the soil prism intercepts the tank, the pressure is equivalent to about 50 PSF. This is in addition to the 724 PSF due to the soil weight. The pressure at 10’ bury is over 1000 PSF. The additional weight of the deck post will not cause any puncturing or failure of the tank. We are requesting a waiver for the 3.3’ separation from the tank to the deck post. This approval will not have any negative consequences on the home or property. The attached site plan identifies the location of the home as well as the wells and septic location. No conflicts exist between this proposed system and any other wells or septic system, whether on this lot or adjacent lots. We are replacing the 1000-gallon septic tank with a 1250-gallon tank. In addition to this tank replacement, we would like to reclassify this system. The original field was a 12’x12’ log crib. In 1988 a new 3-bedroom trench was designed as a replacement, with the crib designated to be abandoned. Instead of that, the crib was left in place and kept connected to the system. Since the two systems together have the capacity for at least 4 bedrooms, we are requesting that the combined system be reclassified as a 4-bedroom system with the new tank. The new septic tank will be a minimum of 100’ from all wells and surface water. Please refer to the attached plan for the septic design. If this design is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.
