ENGIN EERS/SURVEYORS&ANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS TRANSPORTATION and COMMUNITY PLANNING 5568.0 August8, 1996 Department of Health and Human Services On-Site Services Division 825 "L" Street, Suite 502 Anchorage, Ak 99501 SUBJECT: Lot 14, Block 2 McMahon Subdivision Septic System Permit Application Gentlemen: Attached please find the design plans for the above referenced project for your review. This is a replacement system for a failed 18 year old system. Proposed System Design The proposed system has been designed as a deep trench system. The initial soils investigation occurred on 7/10/96. Ground water was not encountered. The material encountered in the test holes was a silty sand with sieve analysis revealing a Universal Soils Classification of SM. The gradation of the soils taken exceeds the 5 percent passing A number 200 sieve. However the percolation rates were around four and six minutes per inch which are attached for your review. The soils sampled were taken at the percolation depths noted. This sandy material continued with some gravel and cobbles was observed to 18 feet in test pit No. 1. This replacement system was designed for six bedrooms which is twice the original design at the owners request. The design flow for this configuration is 900 gallons per day. An application rate of 0.8 gpd/ft2 was used from Table 1. The area required was calculated to be 1125 ft2. Yielding a ,,~foot deep by 749:5~foot long drainfield with a width of a backhoe bucket. We designed afT" type configu/ation with the flow entering at the mid point of the trench. The proposed septic tank is 1750 gallons and will have about five feet of cover as will the connecting pipe and drain field. On-Site Services August 8th, 1996 Page 2 Lot information: The subject lot is approximately .76 acre; and is bordered by similar lots on all sides and Furrow Creek Road on the South. The surface drainage is to the South West on approximately a 1% slope. The well is situated on the Southern half of the lot as are the adjoining neighbors to the East and West. The Lots to the North have a mirror image arrangement with septic to the South and wells on the North. Separation requirements are met. The existing septic tank is only 1000 gallons and is fiberglass. We are recommending that this tank be pumped, rinsed, repumped and be crushed and back filled in place with native sand. A new 1750 gallon tank will is to be installed. Possible Points of Contamination: It is unlikely that there would be any contamination of any of the wells in the surrounding area. All separation distance requirements will be met. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call. The well produced more than 5 gpm for longer than 4 hours, with drawdown in the well casing of 23 feet. In my opinion, this well has adequate capacity to meet a peak demand of more than 8 gpm without additional surface storage. I note that a well test in 1977 showed that this well produced 10 gpm. The laboratory analyses showed no bacterial contamination and a nitrate concentration of 4.7 mg/1. Both are within the State water quality standards. The latter is evidence of the discharge of onsite systems in your area. The drainfield accepted more than 450 gallons of water during the 24 hour test. Many factors affect the operation of an onsite sewerage system. These include soil type, depth to groundwater, age, history of maintenance, characteristics of discharged wastewater, precipita- tion, and soil temperature. The adequacy test that I conducted was an attempt to determine operating capabilities at or exceed- ing the Municipal rating for a 3 bedroom house. The test evalu- ates apparent performance at a specific time and cannot determine either the condition of buried components or expected life of the system. I recommend that you and any future owner of this house follow prudent techniques to prolong service from your sewerage system. These include minimizing discharge of soaps, detergents, clean- ers, and other chemicals and using only those that are biode- gradable; pumping the tank regularly; and minimizing discharge to the sewer, especially high volumes for sustained periods. SRA Box 78-B Anchorage, AK 99507 subject: Soil Investigation for Sanitary Sewer System, Lot 14, Block 2, McMahon Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska Dear Mr. West: At your request of September 1, 1977, we conducted a subsurface soils investigation at the proposed location of the sanitary sewer system on the subject lot. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Health and Environmental Protection. This investigation, which was accomplished on September 2, 1977, consisted of a test hole drilled to a depth of 20 feet below the existing ground surface. The test hole was sited according to your instructions and its location is shown in attached Drawing A-01. Drilling was accomplished with a rotary drill rig using continuous-flight solid-stem auger with an outside diameter of 6 inches. A sample was taken at the depths shown on the soils log in Drawing A-01. The sample will be held in storage at our lab for approximately six months. In addition, all material brought to the surface by the augers was continuously monitored by an experienced engineering geologist. The topography at the drilling site is generally horizontal. At the time of the investigation the site had original vegetation consisting of spruce, birch, and willow. The top of the test hole was located at original ground surface. The soils encountered in the test hole are shown in the test hole log in Drawing A-01. The symbols used in Drawing A-01 are explained in Drawings B-01 and B-02. This log displays specific conditions encountered at the test location. However, subsurface conditions may vary in other parts of the lot without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not encountered. Bedrock was not encountered. At the time the hole was drilled, seasonal frost was not present and permafrost was not encountered. A percolation test was performed within the test hole at the depth shown in the attached Table 1. All depths were measured from the top of the hole. The data in Table 1 show average infiltration from the depths ~ttom of the hole. The measured percolation rate was ~.73~¥nutes per in~ ~ We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you. Normally, the grain size distribution Jetermines classification of the soil. The soil is defined according to major and minor constituents with the minor elements serving as modifiers of the major elements. For co'hesive so{Is, the clay becomes the principal noun with the other major soil constituents used as modifier; i.e. silty clay, when the clay particles are such that the clay dominates soil properties. Minor soll constituents may be added to the classification breakdown in accordance with the particle size proportion listed below; i.e. sandy silt w/some gravel, trace clay. no call - 0 - 3% trace - 3 - 12% some - 13 - 30% SOIL CONSISTENCY - CRITERIA: Soil consistency as defined below and determined by normal field and laboratory methods applies only to non-frozen material. For these materials, the influence of such factors as soil structure, i.e. fissure systems, shrinkage cracks, slickensides, etc., must be taken into consideration in making any correlation with the consistency values listed below.
