This inspection revealed a nitrate concentration of 7.6 milligrams per liter (mg/L) was reported for the property's well water sample. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 mg/L for public drinking water systems. The effective depth of this drainfield, per MOA records, is 10 feet. The invert of the distribution pipe was established in the sump. The monitoring tube should extend 120 inches below the invert of the distribution pipe; however, a thick sludge layer was encountered inside the sump at 94 inches below the invert. This sludge seemed to be localized in the sump. The bottom 26 inches of the drainfield could not be monitored. The capacity of the Irench below this elevation is approximately 415 gallons (see calculations below). On 11/25/2009 2030 gallons were introduced into the drainfield over a period of 420 minutes. During this test, the liquid level did not rise above the sludge layer. This indicates the drainfield absorbed at least 1615 gallons during the test. Calculations for drainfield capacity: Depth (2.16') x Width (3') x Length (26) = 168.48 cubic feet. During the test, the liquid level rose 2 inches in the field. No rise was noted in the tank. The infiltration rate was monitored for 1 hours. During this period, a total of 600 gallons were absorbed. By the observations made, this system has an absorption rate 600 + gallons per day at the time of the test. An adequacy test to determine the wells production was conducted at the same time as the septic system adequacy test. The initial static level of the water was found to be 157 feet below the top of the casing, with a total depth reported to be 221 feet from MOA records. Water was pumped from the well at a constant rate of 4.6 GPM for 130 minutes. A total of 600 gallons were pumped from the well with the static water level drawing down to 160 feet below the top of the well casing. The water quality was not tested for bacteria and nitrates at this time. TESTS RESULTS: This system meets the code and operational requirements of the Municipality of Anchorage In conducting an adequacy test, I attempt to provide a thorough, conscientious engineering analysis of the system. The reported results describe the performance of the system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and septic systems depend on the local soil condition, ground water levels that may fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system. These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of this system. All systems eventually fail and satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that there are no hidden defects or encroachments.
