Test Hole Log - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are tbe best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procednre. If tbe log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an' independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
Deptb Interval -- usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant cbange in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification -- NFS, Fl, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modifidations to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content - this is a qualitative measure:
dry, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no f~ee water, often soft, if cobesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free draining soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand'. (The moisture content is further defined by reference to Pi,
LW, NP, M%or dilatency0
Density -- refers to more-or-less non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fiaction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usuall/ described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray eartbwork
characteristics..
Stiffness -- refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
the clay-silt groups. Derived fi'om drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and bard are commonly used terms.
Particle size The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-S0 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drilling and. are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when reviewing tbe g.'adation sheets, if any,
the description on the bole log must be considered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification - This is a two letter code. See Unified
Classification sheet for.further definition, in some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits -- useful for fine grained and otber plastic softs,
PI; natmal moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
limits
L~w+; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
NP; non.plastic, useful =s a modifying descriution of some silty
materials.
Dilj}t_q.[!c~x -- is the ability of water to migrate to tile su,'fitce of a
saturated or nearly saturated soil sample xvbeu vibrated erjo!tcd - used
as au aid to determine if a fine grained suJl is a slightly or non-pl;tstic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour -- finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
· similar xo a clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
'soil. Quantity described as; trace, or all estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, -- as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
~uck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorphus peat organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat -- organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Testhole - includes last sample interval.
Frost Line -- seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground - other than frost lina, described by samples, usually
includes descript!on of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils -- tbis is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level -- Tbe free water level uoted dining drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table deterndnation in other tban very permeable
soils requites observation wells or piezometer install,,tions, used only in
special cases.
Blow/6" -- The number of blows Of a 140 weight free fal!ing 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard penetration.
5,4~°4 - natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
performed on clean sands or gravels below the water tame.
Type of Sample --
S_sP, refers to 2" split st'oou driven into thc sol! by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample.
_S, thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
.(.i, "grab" distm'bed sample from auger flights or w:dl of trench,
C.Q, cut sample, undisturbed sample flora ~wdl of trench.
l)ry Strength a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fiaction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, tl=lligb
~ro~ -- The samples a,'e placed n o pp.'entlv similar groups based
or, color and texture z*iid are arbitrarily assiglled a group letter. [:urther
disturbed tests including AtteJbe~g Limits. grdn xizc, moisture-density

Test Pit Log
Standard Explanatory Information
Sheet 1
Sheets 2-4
A test pit was dug on the property by the owner using a
backhole. The ~est pit was logged by Mr. O. M. Hatch,
Senior Technician on our staff.
Grab samples were taken from the wall of the test pit as
needed to define the existing soil strata.
Below the top foot of sandy silt on the surface was 8' of
non-frost susceptible brown gravelly sand with some silt.
Its unified classification being SP to SP/S~. This material
will require 170 square feet of percolation area per bedroom.
From 9 to 14' the soil turned to a silty sand with a unified
classification of SM. A percolation test was run in this
zone with at a rate of 2 minutes per inch, for an actual
rating of 85 square feet per bedroom. From 14' to 16' the
material was again non-frost susceptible being a brown sand
and having a unified classification of SW, and a visual
p~rcolation rating of 125 square feet per bedroom.
No free water was observed in the test bit.
If we can be of any further service to you in this regard or
help clarify any of the data presented in this letter,
please feel free to contact our office.
Very truly yours,
