Septic System Upgrade for Lot 7; Marie Estates Subdivision To whom it may concern: The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank and a trench type drainfield. The drainfield is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded prior to the sale of the house. A test hole was excavated on the property. The proposed drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. We are proposing that a new 1250 gallon S.T.E.P. tank with dual outlets and also a pressurized deep trench type drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached log which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. it is our opinion that an application rate of 0.8 gallons/day/ft2 should apply. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 13.3 minutes/inch b. Proposed Application Rate: 0.8 gallons/day/ R2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 3 d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 563 ft2 f. Total Depth: 9 feet (max.) g. Effective Depth: 7 feet h. Width: 2.5 feet i. Reduction Factor: N/A j. Minimum Length: 42 feet long k. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100+ feet of the proposed septic upgrade. 4. TOPOGRAPHY AND SLOPE WAIVER REQUEST: As can be seen on the attached design, there is a slope that exceeds 25 percent slope starting in the middle of the property and is running approximately northwest to southeast. The trench is to be placed on a I to 5 percent slope running from approximately southeast to northwest, which is near the top of the knoll. We request that a 35 feet waiver be granted from the top of the 25+ percent slope -to the proposed drainfield. Given the porosity of the soils and the heavy vegetation on the slopes, there is minimal risk with the granting of this waiver. 5. LOT LINE%N'AIVER REQUEST: We request a I foot lot line waiver from the south lot line to the existing and proposed drainfields. The existing drainfields on Lot 8, Marie Estates Subdivision are 10+ feet from the lot line and the alternate site (for Lot 8) is over 100 feet from the proposed septic system. We are unaware of any adverse effects on the neighboring property with the granting of this waiver. Box 866 Eagle River, AK 99577 Re: Septic System Adequacy Test, Lot 7, Marie Estates (Whaley Subdivision) Dear Mrs. Lund, On February 17 I conducted an adequacy test on the absorption system at the above listed property. The system was able to take ample surge and the absorption rate was sufficient; the system is adequate. During the test, 1400 gallons of clean water were introduced into the absorption system. The system took this without any signs of backup. The rate of drop in the trench was measured and an absorption rate of 2.4 gal/min or 3400 gal/day was calculated. For a three-bedroom house, the suggested pass/fail criteria require that a 500 gallon surge be contained and an absorption rate of at least 450 gal/day be demonstrated. We experienced some difficulty pumping the septic tank. We were only able to pump 700 gallons of liquid and sludge from the tank, although it appears that a 1000 gallon tank is in place. Due to an obstruction, we were unable to insert a three-inch hose into the tank. The septic tank pumper had a length of two-inch pipe which we were able to insert into the tank. However, because of the eight-foot depth of the tank and the access pipe extending four feet above ground level, the two-inch pipe did not reach the bottom of the tank. If the access pipe is cut off at approximately one foot above ground, the entire tank contents could be pumped. If you have any questions regarding this test, please do not hesitate to call.
