Jim Lathrop & Paul Baer
Prior to working on the well Central Alaska Utilities test pumped the existing
facility using a portable generator for power. Static water level in the casing
was 39 feet from the ground surface. The well was pumped at 25 gpm for 10
minutes with 5 feet of drawdown. Central Alaska Utilities removed the existing
submersible pump and pitless adapter m preparation for the drilling work.
The driller, under contract with CAU to do exploratory work in this ,existing
well, moved a cable tool mg on the well site July 26,1974, and began drilling
that day The 50 feet of drilling beyond the bottom of the existing well 'was completed
on July 30, 1974.
Prior to drilling, the well was bailed at approximately 20 gpm for 1 1/2
hours with 10 1/2 feet of drawdown. This was done to have a basis for comparison
should additional quantities of water be located during the drilling. The bottom
of the existing aquifer was determined to be at the 237 foot depth. Throughout
the remaining 50 feet of drilling, no measurable sources of water were found.
Drilling was quite hard at times and the material so dry that water was added
to the casing frequently to continue drilling. The materials encountered were
primarily gray silts and clays.
A~the 286 foot depth, it was decided to terminate the drilling as per the
original plans. The casing was backfilled to the 239 foot depth and cut with a
8" shaped charge. The well was then screened with 5 feet of 8 inch U.O.P. Johnson
Co. stainless steel screen with 100 slot. The screen has a bail bottom and a
K-packer top. It was determined that the gap in the casing caused by the shaped
charge was sufficiently large to allow all water available from the aquifer to enter
the well. Consequently it was not necessary to pull the casing baek..Approximately
34 hours of development time was expended surging and bailing the well after
the screen was installed.
Central Alaska Utilities reinstalled the pump and pitless adapter and conducted
another pump test. The well was pumped at 25 gpm for an hour. The water
cleared and the i/ow was verified to be equal to the original conditions. In addition,
CAU restored the surrounding ground area tO its original condition.
Attached ~s a summary of materials and conditions recorded during drilling.
The full set of drilling togs is available in the job file at DOWL Engineers.
