Overflowing Sewage Complaint
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Mason:
Thank you for your expedient response to the overflowing sewage
problem on your property. In the process of investigating a
complaint of overflowing sewage~on the subject property we
found that the septic system on the property had overflowed.
Preliminary J. ndications are that the septic system is in a
state of failure.
The department appreciates your continuing effort to keep the
septic tank pumped and the area of overflow sanitized. This
complaint has been transferred from Mark Strutko of the
Environmental Sanitation Section to On-site Services Section of
the Health Department. Our section is responsible for
reviewing engineering plans for new and upgraded septic
systems. In this case we are responsible for facilitating a
long term solution to the overflowing sewage situation on the
subject lot.
There are essentially two solutions to the problem of a failed
system. A second system can be installed if site conditions
are suitable. Site conditions must be investigated by a civil
engineer who will determine whether soil characteristics and
the water table situation on the lot will allow the
installation of another on-site disposal (septic) system. If
the engineering investigation indicates that the subject lot
will not support another septic system a holding tank must be
installed.
I have enclosed a copy of our list of approved engineers and a
copy of our permit requirements for on-site wastewater disposal
systems. Please contact one of the engineers on the list
provided. These engineers should be able to provide you with a
diagnosis of your septic system problem and provide you with
some options for a remedy. Normally the time required to
diagnose the septic system problem and obtain an upgrade permit
permit takes less than two weeks. The investigation, design
and installation of a replacement wastewater disposal system
can usually be accomplished within a month of the Notice of
Violation. In the interim, the tank should be pumped on an as
needed basis. We would appreciate your prompt attention to
this matter. If you are unable to proceed promptly with the
process of remedying this situation please contact me at
343-4744. Thanks again for your cooperation.
