OF HEALTH & I~NVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION APR RECEIVED Dear Mr. Aldridge: On March 24, 1984, our firm performed an adequacy test of the septic system on the above reference property. This test was conducted as a preliminary to obtaining a Municipality of Anchorage Health Authority Approval, which is required before the property can be sold. Several problems were observed prior to performing the adequacy test. These concern the condition of the two standpipes in the driveway, both of which have been broken off. It is believed that one of these is a cleanout for the line to the septic tank, and the other is a standpipe for the septic tank. Pumping of the septic tank yielded only about 750 gallons from the next standpipe in line, thus we suspect 'that 'the tank has two compartments, and only the second compartment was pumped. If this is the case, only that compartment has been pumped in the recent past (7 years), which would imply that the first compartment is in dire need of pumping. The adequacy test itself revealed that the existing seepage pit is not operating properly. The absorption capacity required for a two bedroom dwelling is 300 gallons per day the test yielded an absorption capacity of less than 50 gallons per day. As a result, upgrading of your septic system will be required. This should consist of instllation of a new soil absorption unit, repair of existing standpipes on the portion of the system which will be retained, and a 'thorough cleaning of the septic tank. It appears as if previous soil test results are usable for design of the absorption system upgrade. Due to the limited amount of space available, it is recommended that the absorption system size is based on a 2-bedroom dwelling. The next step which you need to pursue is to deliver a copy of this letter to the MOA-DHEP at 825 'L' st., 4th floor. They will issue a permit to perform the upgrade, and also a well permit if you have not yet obtained that. Then you must contact an approved excavator to install the upgrade. At that time, you should also contact me to arrange installation inspections. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions. The well is a new installation as of spring, 1984. A well log has been submitted separately, and water quality analysis results are attached. Measured distances which you do not have are: 107' from well to septic tank. 115' from well to absorption area. C±earances to neighboring systems are satisfactory. The well casing extends at least 12 inches above ground surface, and ground surface is sloped away from the casing. A satisfactory sanitary seal has been installed~ and wiring is enc±osed in conduit.
