Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 RE: Heritage Hills Blk 1, Lot 3A Septic System Upgrade To Whom It May Concern: Attached please find the application and supporting documentation for upgrading the septic system for the referenced 3 bedroom house. The existing concrete septic tank and crib were installed in 1965, and a trench was added in 1985. A septic adequacy test was performed and showed an absorption rate less than 200 gpd. It is proposed to inspect the existing concrete tank, abandon the crib in place, retain the existing trench, and install a new deep trench drainfield. The proposed design is based upon a test hole dug on August 19, 2004. No water was encountered when the hole was dug or after 7 days of monitoring. The test hole was dug to a total depth of 18.5 ft and encountered sand and silt. Two percolation tests were run: 1) from 2.5 to 3.0 ft in the sand, with a rate of 1.7 minutes per inch, and 2) from 6.5 to 7.0 ft in the silt, with a rate of 27 minutes per inch. The soil log is attached. Due to the difference in percolation rates, an averaged application rate of 0.7 gpd/ft2 is used in the design. Proposed Soil Absorption System: 3 Bedrooms x 150 GPD/BR = Application rate: 450 GPD / 0.7 gpd/ft2 = System Type: Maximum Depth: Effective Depth: Length Required = Proposed Length: 450 GPD 0.7 gpd/ft2 643 sq. ft required deep trench 12.5 ft 10.0 ft 643 sq. ft / 20 ft = 32 ft 35 ft Sewer Upgrade Permit Application for Heritage Hills, Blk 1, Lot 3A Watkins Engineering, Inc.; August 27, 2004; page 2 There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system. The existing concrete tank is about 90 ft from the well, which was allowed in 1965 when the tank was installed. You reported that your septic system consists of a concrete septic tank and a seepage pit, and that the pit had been pumped on October 8, 1979. In accordance with the Anchorage Municipal Code, Chapter 15.65, Waste Water Disposal Regulations, any on-site sewage disposal system "shall have adequate capacity to properly dispose of the maximum daily sewage flow." The maximum daily flow is computed at 75 gallons per capita - day (gcpd). Since "the population of dwellings shall be estimated at two persons per sleeping room," the maximum daily sewage flow for your 3 -bedroom house is 450 gallons per day (gpd). On first attempting to perform the adequacy test on October 31, 1979, the seepage pit was found to be full of wastewater. The septic tank standpipe could not be found at that time. You reported that the septic tank standpipe was located and both the tank and the pit were pumped on November 5, 1979. The second attempt to test the system was on November 12, 1979. Six hundred gallons of clear water was added in 50 -gallon increments to the seepage pit. The water was obtained from your on-site private well at its average sustained rate of 4 gallons per minute (gpm). The liquid levels in both the tank and the pit were monitored closely. The attached Summary of Test Results shows that the liquid level in the seepage pit dropped 2.0 feet on the second day of the test, after a rise of 2.9 feet when the 600 gallons of water was added. The level in the septic tank dropped 1.2 feet after a rise of 0.6 feet during the test on November 12, 1979. Mrs. Jack Dunbar November 13, 1979 Page 2 The level in the seepage pit at its highest level during the test (11.5 feet, liquid depth) was at the ground surface and approximately 0.3 feet below the liquid level in the septic tank after its 0.6 foot rise.' Based on the one day of testing, a percolation rate of 400 gallons per day is indicated. However, since the liquid level in the pit was raised to within 0.2 feet of ground .surface at the 450 -gallon point (600 gallons added), and the level in the septic tank began to rise at the 200 -gallon point in the test (the water was added to the seepage pit), we are unable to conclude that the 4400=0 gpd per- colation rate is acceptable for that portion of the required 450 gallons of percolation per day. Many factors affect the operation of a soil absorption type of sewage disposal system. Soil type, groundwater depth, age and history of maintenance of the system, and types of waste are a few. This test has been performed in an attempt to determine actual soil absorption capabilities of your septic system under normal usage by considering the degree of saturation of the leach field and surge loads that might be imposed on the system.
