Site Description:
The eastern edge of Havitur Way (see Plate 1) lies approximately at
the eastern toe of a north-south trending hill ~onsisting of dense
silty, gravelly glaeial till. The area to the east is a poorly
drained topographic low which over the distant past has filled with
.decomposing organic plant material to form a peat deposit. The sur-
face is covered with muskeg and scattered black spruce trees. The
ground water table lies near the muskeg surface. In the recent past,
fill material composed mainly of soil, brush, and trees obtained from
clearing operations have been placed to make a relatively flat area
over the lots to the east of Havitur l;ay. The thickness of the fill
ranges from zero along Havitur Way to as much as 8 to 10 feet thick
on the eastern edges of the northern lots.
Site ~ploration:
Three test pits were excavated at locations as shown on Plate 1.
Iuogs of the test pits are included as Plates 2, 5, and 4. The
original ground surface (at toe of fill material) along the easterm
boundary of Lots i to 6, Block 5, and the boundary between Lots 1
and 2, Block 5~were probed wi~h a 5-foot long bar in an attempt to det-
ermine the depth of mineral soil beneath the overlying muskeg and peat.
~o attempt was made to determine the subsurface condition~ on the
southern sides of Lots 11, 12, and 15 of Block 1 or the northern and
eastern sides of Lot I of Block 5.
Findings:
a. Test Pits: Mineral soil was found directly under the fill in
Test Pits No. 1 and No. 2; the area had been cleared before placement
of the fill. ~inera! soil was found directly under the muskeg surface
in Test'Pit No. 5. There was no evidence of ground water in Test Pit
No. 1; however, ground water stood at the original ground surface
level in Test Pits 2, and ~.
bo Probing: Mineral soil was found at or very near ground surface
(1 to 2 feet deep) along a 100-foot length of the eastern side of
Lot 6 and along the lot line separating Lots 1 & 2. Mineral soil could
not be reached with the probe (4 to 4~ feet deep) along the eastern
side of Lots 2,5,4, or 5. A thin layer of frozen peat was generally
encountered and penetrated at about the 1 to 1½-foot depth. The top
of another frozen zone or a fine-grained mineral soil was encountered
in 2 or 5 locations at about the 5 to 4-foot depth.
Conclus ions:
1. The contact (on the original ground surface) between mineral soil
and peat lles generally between a line trendin~ through the test pits
and the easters boundary, of the subdivision. Additional exploration
would be required to further define the limits and depths of the peat
deposit.
2. The ground water table is shallow, generally lying near the orig-
inal ground surface under the fill.
5. The natural underlying granular glacial deposits found in the test
pits are dense and strong and would provide good b_ear~g ~o
4. Consolidation of the peat under the fill with resultino~ settlement
of the fill will continue at a decreasing rate (generally fractions of
an inch per year) for years with the amount of settlement proportional
to the thickness of the peat and the magnitude of the applied load..
5. Consolidation of the fill material may also take place for a short
time. The amount of settlement will be a function of initial fill
density and eomDosltion and history of inundation and imposed load.
Due to the many variables, no %eneral prediction can be made.
6. The existence of remnant frost or permafrost under a portion of the
area is remotely possible. There is no conclusive evidence of perma-
frost; however, it can exist in this ~eneral area and should always
be a consideration in the evaluation of site explorations.
