Dem' Sirs:
The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design nan'ative in suppml of our application for a
permit to upgrade the wastewater disposal facilities on Lot 5, La Foret S/D, located at 13351 Ginpole
Circle. Soils logs, perc test results, a site plan, design drawings and specifications are enclosed for yom'
review.
The proposed system will be constructed in the vicinity of test hole # 2. As can be seen from the soil
log, the native material between 4' mid 18' is a somewhat silty sand with a measured perc rate of 4 minutes
per inch. Using a slightly conservative soil application rate of. 0.8 gpd/sq, ft., this 3 bedi'oom residence
requh'es a total absorption area of 3(150)/0.8 = 562.5 squm'e feet. The proposed 41' long n'ench with 7'
of sewer gravel has a total absmption m'ea of 574 square feet.
The topography of the lot in the m'ea of the proposed construction slopes towm'ds the southwest at
approximately 3%
The proposed project will have no significant impact on present or future water supply and wastewater
disposal systems serving adjacent properties, nor will it have any significant impact on rese~wed space-
surface and subsurface, or on drainage.
Please give me a call at 345-1355 if you have any questions on this submittal.
Sincerely,
Ted Moore, P.E.

Specifications
1.0 General:
1.1 The scope of the project consists of consU'uction of a 41 foot long soil absorption trench with a
total of 7.5 feet of sewer gravel.
1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor
deviations from these &'awings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections.
All construction procedm'es and material specifications shall conform with Municipal and State
requirements. All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless
specifically waived.
1.3 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain any necessm3, utility locates, and to work around any
bmSed utilities.
1.4 The contractor shall provide adequate cover material and rough grading over all system
components to ensure that proper di'ainage is achieved after settlement and that there m'e no residual
depressions. Insofm' as possible the contractor shall minimize damage to trees and existing lawn areas.
1.5 Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the homeowner shall be responsible for finish grading after
the soil is compacted, as well as placement of topsoil and reseeding all m'eas disturbed by the consn'uction.
2.0 Septic Tank:
2.1 The existing 1000 gallon septic tank may be retained in smwice, only if it's structural integaity has
been verified by the inspecting engineer, and if it has functional cleanout pipes with ah'tight caps, allowing
pumping access to each compartment. Any existing septic tank or seepage pit which is not retained in
setw~ce must be properly abandoned by thoroughly pumping, removing the top and backfilling with soil.
2.2 If it is required, a new 1000 gallon, 2 compm'tment septic tank shall be Municipally approved and
shall be set level on undistm'bed soil. Each compartment shall be equipped with a watertight manhole
cover and a 4" cleanout. If the tank is buffed less than 4 feet, it shall be insulated with 2 inches of
approved burial type, rigid insulation.
2.3 All pipe connections to the tank shah be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings. The
waste line from the residence to the septic tank shall have a minimum slope of 1/4'" per foot, and the waste
line between the tank and the soil absorption system shall have a minimum slope of 1/8" per foot. A "Bull
Run" diverter valve shall be installed downsn'emn of the septic tank allowing reconnection to the original
soil absorption trench at a future date, if desired. A double cleanout shall be installed within 5 feet
downstream of the diverter valve.
3.0 Soil absorption system:
3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed by excavating a 41 foot long trench to a depth of
11.5 feet below original ground level in the vicinity of test hole #2.
3.2 The bottom of the excavation shall be level. Any compacted or smem'ed surfaces shall be raked to
allow proper infilt~'ation.
3.3 A total of 7.5 feet of approved sewer gravel shall be placed in the bottom of the excavation with
the perforated distribution pipes laid level such that the pipe inverts a'e no less than 7.0 feet above the
bottom of the sewer gravel. Sewer gravel shall be 0.5" - 2.5" screened gravel, with less than 3% passing
the 4/200 sieve.
3.4 Monitor tubes and cleanout pipes shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on
the design drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be
perforated.
3.5 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the enth'e top sm'face of the sewer gravel. A minimum
of 2 feet of soil cover is to be placed over the filter fabric. If the soil cover thickness is less than 3 feet,
two inches of rigid, burial type insulation is to be placed over the entke top surface of the gravel, in
addition to the filter fabric.
3.6 The top surface of the cover matefial shall be raised a minimum of 12 inches higher than the
surrounding terrain to allow for subsequent settlement, and shall be graded to smooth contom's. Fill
slopes shall be no steeper than 3:1.
3.7 Unless specifically agreed otherwise the homeowner shall be responsible for arranging to have the
site finish graded after tbe backfill material has stabilized, and for placement of adequate topsoil and seed
to promote rapid revegetation of all m'eas disturbed by the consU'uction.
4.0 Inspections:
4.1 A minimum of 4 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project: (1)
initial stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans,
specifications and construction procedures, (2) after the native material has been excavated to expose the
infiltrative sm'face to ensure that it is level and at the fight elevation, and confo~xns with the soil test
infmrnation, (3) after the sewer gravel is in place and the disu'ibution pipes have been laid and connected
up to the septic tank, but prior to placement of insulation or filter fabric, and (4) after rough backfill and
grading is complete. If a new septic tank is requh'ed, it will entail one inspection after it is set level and the
piping connected, but prior to backfill. This inspection may be incorporated with any of the above
inspections.
4.2 The installer shall coordinate the thning of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently fro' in
advance to ensure the availability of the engineer.

Dear Mr. Korynta:
Ab instructed, we conducted a subsurface investigation for
the above referenced property on March 26, 29 and April 1,
'1976. The results of that investigation are included in
this report. Following the text are:

Drilling was Accomplished utilizing a Mobile Drill B-50
drill rig mounted on a Flextrac-Nodwell tracked vehicle
owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. The test holes
were logged, the drilling supervised and the percolation
tests run by Mr. O.M. Hatch, staff geologist with Alaska
Testlab.
Samples were taken off the flights of the solid 'flight auger
as it was brought to the surface. The samples were sealed
in plastic bags and transported to the laboratory where
their natural moisture content and dry strength was determined.
Each sample was then visually c].assi, fied and grouped accord-
ing to the soil's c. olor, texture, and grain size distribution.
Labo].~atorv analysis was then done on the group as a whole
rather than on individual samples.

Group G is a sandy silt that is moderately frost susceptible
' '- being--~at~d'~-2~. Its unified classification is SM
and its gradation is shown on sheet 6.
Gr___oup H is a silty gravelly sand that is moderately frost

Group I is a sand that is non-to-moderately frost susceptible
- '--- being-rated NFS/F-2. Unified classification is
SP/SM.
Due to the difficulty of running percolation tests on the
site at this time, a percolation test was run in test holes
1 and 5 only, though all holes were cased with 3/4" slotted
PVC pipe.
Unwin Scheben & Korynta
April 5, 1976
Page 3
For the percolation tests, the test hlles were filled with
wa{er and left overnight to saturate. On returning, the
holes were refilled and the drop in the water level carefully
monitored over the next 60 minutes.
This procedure is not a standardized percolation test,
however, we understand that the Anchorage Department of
Environmental Quality prefers test performed in this manner
%o evaluate a site for a proposed on-site sewerage.system.
Using the above test, the observed minimum percolation rate
was 5.5 min/inch for test hole 1, and 1.7 min./inch for test
hole 5.
Additionally, we estimate that the percolation rates for the
other holes (using visual a~d laboratory data) to be:
Test Hole 2 -
Test Hole 3 -
'Test Hole 4 -
Test Hole 6 -
Test Hole 7 -
Test Hole 8 -
Less than 8 min./inch
Less than 30 min./inch
Less than 30 min./inch
Less than 10 min./inch
Less than 5. min./inch
Less than 5 min./inch
Depending on the results of the final percolation tests to
be performed after access is provided ~ t]~e site, ~[i~c~h~e
treatment plants~ may be required in the area of test holes
3 and 4. Even this area should percolate ~airly well --
particularly below ten feet.
No water table was encountered during 'exploration. It.
should .be noted, however, that the water level will fluctuate
with seasonal and climatic changes.
To help visualize the soil strata at the site, we have drawn
some idealized soil profiles for the site. It should be
remembered when using these though, that wide variances may,
and probably do, exist between test holes.
We hope this is sufficie~lt for your present needs, if we
can offere clarification please do not hesitate to contact
. Very truly yours,
Melvin R~ Nichols, CE
