2. All requirements specified in Anchorage Municipal code Chapters 15.55 and 15.65 and the State of Alaska Wastewater
Disposal Regulations (18AAC72) and Drinking Water Regulations (18AAC80).
3. The wastewater code requires inspections during the installation. The engineer must notify the Development Services
Department at least 2 hours prior to each inspection. Provide notification by calling (907) 343-7904 (24 hours).
4. From October 15 to April 15, a subsurface soil absorption system under construction during freezing weather must either:
A. Open and Close on the same clay.
B. Covered, sealed, and heated to prevent freezing.

An existing trench/tank has failed on the subject lot. A new soil test was competed- attached. The
design calls for a 5' -wide trench, and a new septic tank. A diverter valve will be installed and
connected to old trench. The entire subdivision is on public water and septic systems. The terrain
slope at the septic system is flat. The system size is a single family at 3 bedrooms.
Please review the wastewater system design for the existing 3 bedroom home. I have included
design plans & specs, design guidelines, & soil tests. If there is need for additional information or
clarification please give me a call.

SPECIFICATT MW& DESIGN GUIDELINES
Wastewater System Sizing: This is an existing 3 -bedroom, single family home. This is a
developed subdivision. These lots are large and are served by public water. No adverse
impacts are expected from trench/tank upgrade. No conflicts to the other lots will take
place by this septic system construction. The easements are located on the drawing and
are not encroached upon. A new test hole was completed. An application rate of 0.8
GPD/FT2 with 0.5 reduction factor for utilizing a 5' wide trench. Trench Length = 562.5
FT2/5'x .5 reduction factor = 56.25'; 1 line @ 57'. A new 1000 gallon septic tank will be
installed; Decommission old tank/trench per UPC. Install Diverter Valve To Both Old
And New Trench- "ON" To New Trench.

Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the
Municipality of Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water
Regulations and Wastewater Regulations.
• Two compartment, New 1000 gallon septic tank. Install new Double Cleanouts.
• 5' minimum between the tank and trench. 10' to property lines.
• 3' of cover or insulation is required for trench; 2" Minimum thickness for insulation
can substitute for 1' cover.
• Tank & solid pipe must be set on well compacted, stable soil.
• 4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required 1' to 4' from foundation
wall, prior to any 90 degree bend in 4 inch line, in each tank compartment, and two
adjacent opposing cleanouts between the tank and the absorption field, not more than
10' from the tank positioned to provide cleanout access towards the tank and towards
the absorption field.
• All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
• In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
• Trench to be placed level, minimum of 4' to groundwater, 6' to bedrock from drain -
rock.
• Drain rock to be 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch screened. Drain rock to be distributed uniformly
throughout the trench.
• Perforated pipe to be installed level with perforations down.
• Silt barrier (filter fabric) to be installed above the drain rock.
• Smeared trench sides must be raked or scarified before drain rock placement.
• Backfill over drain rock must not be less than 36".
• The finish grade must be mounded to promote drainage away from trench.
• Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
• Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789,
ABS ASTM D2661,
• Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
• Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.
• Insulation board to be extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Styrofoam HI/equal)

Septic System Verification

In accordance with our conversation on February 1, I have conducted an on-site
investigation of the existing septic system on the above noted lot. All cleanouts and
monitoring tubes were exposed and inspected. The distances between the existing trailer
and the standpipes, and the standpipes themselves were measured, and their location
determined by swing -tie measurements from the trailer and existing garage.
The cleanouts and monitoring tube were probed with a 16 ft. measuring rod to determine
the depth of the distribution piping, and the total depth of the system. The standing
effluent in the trench was measured at 16 inches. The soils in this area vary widely. The
owner has indicated that this lot is underlaid by deposits of clean sand and gravel which
are in the 85 to 100 square feet per bedroom range.
I have included a copy of a pumping receipt from JR's Septic Pumping, as verification that
the owners have been maintaining the system, and of the size of the tank.
This lot is serviced by the McKinley View Estates Community Well. ADEC Well I.D. no.
210697. The well is at least 1/4 mile from the lot.
It is my understanding that the owners intend to remove the existing trailer and build a
two story frame house on the lot, and are therefore applying to the Municipality for a Land
Use Permit.
I have included a copy of the recent As -Built drawing by Robert C. Johnson, for your
information.
