The exploration was conducted using a Mobile Drill B-50 drill rig with a continuous flight solid stem auger, mounted on a Flextrack Nodwell tracked vehicle, owned and operated by Denali Drilling Inc. The drilling was supervised and the test holes logged by Oz Hatch, geologist with Alaska Testlab. The percolation test was run by Wallace Oliver, staff technician with Alaska Testlab. The test hole was placed at the approximate location shown on the attached Figure 1. The log of this hole is included as Table A of the report. In interpretting the log, it would be helpful to utilize the standard explanatory informa- tion contained in the back of this report. After the drilling was completed, the test hole was filled with water and left overnight to saturate. On returning the next day the hole was refilled with water and the drop in the water level carefully monitored over the next 60 minutes. The percolation rate observed was 1.8 minutes per inch. Utilizing the data contained in Table I, "Absorption -Area Requirements for Individual Residences" on page 8 of the "Manual of Septic Tank Practices" published by the U.S. Dept. of Health _Education and Welfare, the absorption area requirements for a seepage—pit placed in the soils of this lot� 85 square feet per bedrbom>, i Mr. Dave Horne October 20, 1975 page 2 Based on our experience, the percolation rate obtained from this test was unusually high for the type of soil encountered. We therefore recommend using a more conservative value of 145 square feet per bedroom. When the seepage pit has been opened up, it should be inspected for any unusual conditions which may have caused the high percolation rate. On the date of exploration, no water table was detected in the test hole. It should be noted, though, that the water table normally fluctuates with the seasonal and climatic changes. To whom it may concern, During our inspection of the aforementioned lot, the distance between the 1986 drainfield and the well on Latta Lot 4 was found to be 79 feet. The monitoring tube at the west end of the drainfield was buried and had to be excavated and found to be used. In short, during the HAA/COSA process for the surrounding lots, the pipe was not visible to be located for proper identification of separation distances. We request that you waive the distance from well to drainfield to 79 feet. The following items are justification for this waiver. A water sample was collected from the well on Latta S/D Lot 4 indicating non-detectable amounts of nitrates and no bacteria present. In short, the deficiency has existed since 1986 without significantly negatively impacting water quality. Topography of the neighborhood is such that if effluent were to overflow from the drainfield on Lot 3, it would be captured in the roadway drainage ditch and directed away from the well. Attached to this letter is the completed paperwork for final Health Authority approval. At the time of your review of the design, you requested a letter from the engineer stating that an abandoned crib could be intercepted during construction and stating what steps would be taken in disposing of the material. We supplied that information to you in a letter dated August 7, 1986. However, the construction of the new drain£ield did not intercept the previously abandoned crib. The previous as -built drawings were not to scale, nor. were "tie" distances given to enable surface location of the previously abandoned crib. From field observations of the septic tank outlet placement and the location of large trees, the field inspector determined the abandoned crib to be approximately 15 feet from the new trench. The DHEP permit required two other items: 1. Soils log of entire trench - A log drawing is attached. As seen on the drawing, the soil varied somewhat; however, for most all of the trench, the soils were very good. 2. An additional perc test in a lower strata - This test was performed at the 9 - 10 foot depth. The soils rating for the perc test was 125 SF/BR. The location of the perc test can be seen on the as -built drawing. Further, the required trench length was 70 feet.
