Street Anchorage, Alaska 99501 Attn: Jim Haden Dear Mr. Haden: October 11, 1983 Conservation ~ ¥ , 0~,c~ As requested by Mr. Chris Sorensen, Alaska Environmental Control Services has investigated the potential utilization of a rain catchment system to supplement his domestic water supply on Lot 2B, Block 1 of the Birchwood South Subdivision. Based upon an actual occupancy of 4 individuals, and anticipated conservative utilization of available water at 30 gallons per person per day, daily household requirements should be 120 gallons per day (43,800 gallons per year). We feel that it is feasible to supply approximately 30% of Mr. Sorensen's yearly water demand utilizing a cistern system for rainwater collection. This value is based upon available data on mean total monthly precipitation in the Anchorage Area Borough, and estimated catchment area provided by the roof of his home (See Figure 1). In addition, Mr. Sorensen has stated that his existing well is producing 3 gallons per hour, though the apparent~epth of the source is about 23 feet. This water source can potent~l~y meet 60% of his water comsumption. When combined with ~e~cistern system, and adequately treated to maintain water qual~ the~e sources could provide 90% of Mr. S°rensen' s water requ!r¢~'~s ~ c~si_ __, _~gT~ ~.~ Depending on the ultimate~yst~d~sij~x~_~n, the total water availability via the existing ~611 ,~.~i .p~posed cistern could meet monthly consumption during 8-9 m~'~\¢out of the year. Mr. Sorensen has informed us that additional w~...~'~'2~a~ be supplied by tanker truck to supplement the system during-~-~---Y~-peri~ds in which water consumption exceeds availability via the cistern/well system. The transport of water is a common practice by residents of Mr. Sorensen's community, due to relative difficulty in obtaining water throughout the area. Therefore, the necessity for additional water during these periods need not be considered limiting to the homeowner, provided that conservative water usage is observed· Should you require any additional information, please feel free to contact me at 276-1361. We will also be available for inspection of this system if you wish. 1200 ~esl 33rd Auenue, Suite B · Anchoroqe, Alosko 99,503 · (907) 276-1361 Harald R R · Ehlers Environmental Engineer ECEIVED OCT 1 1 1983 ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION REGION II
