Dear Mr. Crawford:
i have reviewed the documents on the above proposed sub-
division. We had previously discussed impact, on your
operation should this area be (!evelopod as residential.
In that case a serious enforcement pr©bll.em could deveJ.op
when residentia-% uses conflict wi th range uses.
It now appears tha't industria.], zoning wJ].] occur. In this
case the uses sNould be fairly compai:ib]_e. We hearti].y
endorse a bufiering area between the I..wo ladd uses, pro--
vided .'Ll] is actually a noise abatement struchure and not
just a stand of birch trees.
This department will continue to oppose resident:ia), zoning
next to your facility°
Sincerely,
Susan F,. Oswa]_f:

Subsurface Investigation for Birchwood West
Industrial Park, Located Within Sections 5 and 6,
]ownship 15N, Ranqe 1W, Seward Meridian, Alaska
Gentlemen:
lhis letter constitutes the results of our shallow subsurface
soils investigat±on for the above mentioned project, lhe
exploration was conducted to determine the near surface soil
and groundwater conditions underlying the site. Included
with this report is a test pit location map, test pit logs,
grain size distribution curves and standard explanatory
information.
1o accomplish this, six backhoe pits were excavated on April
3, 1984, utilizing a Mitsubishi MS120 backhoe provided by the
client, lhe test pit locations, shown on Figure 1, were
located by cloth tape from existing survey monuments. With-
out the benefit of an accurate survey, the test pit locations
should be considered approximate.
In each test pit representative samples of each major soil
horizon were taken, sealed in plastic bags to prevent mois-
ture loss and transported to the laboratory where they were
visually classified and mechanical analyses performed on
representative samples.
Upon completion of each test pit, a lenoth of ~/4-inch diame-
ter perforated PVC pipe was placed in each pit to allow the
monitoring of groundwater fluctuations with time.
Similar soils were encountered in all six test pits. Beneath
a thin layer of surface organics and forest litter, the site
is mantled by about 2 feet of Red-Brown Silty Sand. lhe sand
is frost susceptible with a trace of organic matter. Beneath
the silts and extendinq to the depth of our exploration, the
soil consists of well graded Sandy Gravel. lhe gravels are
typically subrounded to rounded with a maximum size of

approximately 10 inches. The gravels are very "clean" with
only a trace of silt. The soils are damp and very dense.
Mechanical analyses were performed on representative samples
of the gravel, the results of which are shown on the attached
grain size distribution curves.
No groundwater was observed in any of the test pits during
the short time they were open.
No percolation tests were performed since the soils encoun-
tered are classified as NFS, 6W and GP gravels. The gravels
are expected to be quite permeable and should be suitable for
on-site wastewater disposal systems.
We hope this brief report is sufficient for your present
needs. If you have any questions or if we can be of further
service, please let us know.
Sincerely,
