Septic System Replacement
Dear On -Site Services Engineer:
The owner of the above lot has a septic tank that has reached its end of useful life along with a
failed trench, so we are submitting this permit application for a new system. The attached site
plan identifies the location of the home as well as the wells and septic location. No conflicts exist
between this proposed system and any other wells or septic system, whether on this lot or
adjacent lots.
The lot is primarily flat, with minor slopes in varying directions. The new trench will be placed
where there is a gentle slope down from the neighboring property, and will be placed parallel to
the contours. There are no steep slopes within 50' of this new trench. Storinwater will not affect
the system. It will be placed 16' away from the existing trench, which will be decommissioned.
The septic tank will be replaced with a 1500-gallon steel STEP tank in the same location as the
old tank. Wells on this and adjacent lots are shown, and there are no conflicts, whether on this lot
or adjacent lots. The tank and trench are 100' away from surface water.
Please refer to the attached test hole log, plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this
design is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.
Sincerely,
Benjami Schiller, PE

Re: Proposed Bubbling Brook Subdivision
Subsurface Soils Investigation
Dear Mr. Newton:
This report presents the results of our soils investigation for the proposed
subdivision of a l0 acre tract located east of Birch Road and just west of '
Ravenwood Subdivision. The investigation was~conducted on November 15 and 16,
1977. The results of this investigation are included in this report as follows:
Vicinity Map
Test Hole Location Sketch
Test Hole Logs (Sheets 1 through 9)
Standard Explanatory Information
Drilling was accomplished utilizing a mobile drill B-50 mounted on a flex
track Nodwel vehicle, owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. Test holes
were logged and perculation tests conducted by our firm.
The purpose of the investigation was to provide soils data and perculation
tests for establishing the feasibility of on-site disposal of sanitary wastes
using seepage pits. To accomplish this, we drilled 9 borings distributed
across the site with 1 test hole on each lot at the probable septic system
location. The test hole locations are shown on the attached location sketch.
All borings were drilled to a depth of 16 feet. During the drilling, our
engineer was present to log the materials encountered and obtain grab samples
of the sol) types. All soils were visually classified in the field in accord-
ance with the unified soil classification system as described in the standard
explanatory information attached herewith.
Since the site is fairly small and readily accessible from both sides, per-
culation tests were conducted in all holes at the completion of the drilling
and logging. The perculation tests were conducted from the 6 to 12 foot
levels in each of the holes in accordance with the Manual For Septic Tank
Practice published by the PHS. A ground water table was encountered in test
hole Number 9 at the 12 foot level. Therefore, the perculation test in this
hole was conducted between the 4 to 8 foot level.

On-site waste disposal systems appear feasible on all lots. An aerated package

Lot 2, Bubbling Brook Subdivision
Well and Septic System Inspection, Testing and Certification
Dear Ed:
A flow test was performed on the well and water system on Lot 2, Bubbling Brook
Subdivision on July 15, 2010. The static water level in the well was found to be 145.2'
below the top of the casing prior to beginning of the test. The water was then allowed to
flow freely for a period of 4 hours and the well production measured on a regular basis
during that period. The average flow monitored during the test period was slightly more
than 7.0 gallons per minute and the static water level dropped slightly and recovered
rapidly once the test ended. The well and water system is in compliance with Municipal
and State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) regulations and
meets all requirements for a three bedroom home. We did note, however, a gap
between the electrical conduit leading to the well head cover. The current code requires
all wiring be encased in conduit from the well head to a minimum of 6" below ground.
A water sample was taken from the system and tested for coliform, bacteria, arsenic
and nitrate content. The results from the testing are attached and indicate the nitrate
content is below the maximum allowable limit. No coliform, bacteria or arsenic was
found in the water sample.
The septic system was inspected to verify it was functioning in accordance with the
original design. MuniciPal records indicate the system was constructed in 2003 and
replaced a system constructed in 1978. The newer system is composed of a 1,250
gallon septic tank and a 65' long x 2' wide x 8' effective depth absorption trench. The
original absorption trench is composed of a 51' long x 3' wide x 6' absorption trench and
is connected to the new system with a flow diverter valve. No monitor tube was found in
the old trench, but our probing indicating it is probably dry.
The absorption trench constructed in 2003 and currently in service was found to have a
total of 83.5" of water indicating only 12.5" of freeboard remaining. We then injected
620 gallons of water into the absorption trench. The water level rose to 93.2". The
water level then receded back to its original depth over the next 24 hours. The system
is therefore capable of absorbing a minimum of 150 gallons of water per bedroom over
a 24 hour period and meets Municipal criteria for certification.
Lot 2, Bubbling Brook
July 21, 2010
The septic tank was recently pumped and the diverter valve turned to allow flow into the
old trench. We recommend using the old trench for at least the next year to allow the
new trench to rest and dry out. The valve should then be turned back to allow flow into
the newer trench. No monitor tube is in place in the old trench so it will not be possible
to monitor the water level in this trench.
Sincerely,
Michael E. Anderson, P.E.
