Septic trench design and permit application
Dear On-Site Services Engineer:
The septic system on the above lot has failed, so we are submitting this permit application for the
construction of a trench. The existing tank is concrete, and we have verified its integrity. The
attached site plan identifies the location of the home, well, existing septic location as well as the
proposed trench. No conflicts exist between this proposed system and any other well or septic
system, whether on this lot or adjacent lots.
The ground surface on the lot is flat where the house sits, but on the rest of the lot slopes mildly
toward the south and west. The slopes do not exceed 15 %. There are no slopes greater than 25%
within 50 feet downslope of either the primary or alternate site. Drainage arrows are shown on the
site plan showing the grade and direction of flow. Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic
system.
The new trench will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible. It will be a minimum
of 100’ from all wells and surface water, and more than 5’ away from the septic tank. We will
install a bull-run valve to allow the existing trench to recover and be used as an alternate site.
Please refer to the attached test hole logs, soils lab analysis, plan and profile pages for the septic
design. If this design is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.

Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The absorption trench on the subject lot has failed and must be replaced.
We hereby request a permit to upgrade the system in accordance with the
attached design. A testhole placed on the lot revealed a medium graded
sand with a percolation rate of 12 minutes per inch. We are proposing to
place a wide drainfield with 4' of drainage rock beneath the laterals. A
total of 57' of trench will be required. A diversion valve will be installed
so the existing absorption system may be reused at a future time if it
dries out.
The topography of the lot slopes from north to south from 3% to 4%. It
also slopes from west to east at a rate of 2% to 5%. No groundwater was
found in the testhole at depths over 18'. The existing septic tank falls
within the 100' radius of the well, but it has grandfather rights since it
was installed in the early 1970s. If the tank is found to be leaking it will
be replaced with a new tank placed outside the well radius. No other
conflicts exist with other wells in the area.
If the absorption trench is placed in the location shown the following
statements can be made:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in
the future.

A water sample revealed an arsenic concentration of 35.7 micrograms per liter
(ug/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum
contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 ug/L for public drinking water systems. While
private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing
health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water
from private wells. information on arsenic is available from the On-Site Water and

Mr Tobben Spurkland, the P.E. in charge of our on site inspection
suggested that I write this note to explain the change in status of our
home from a four (4) bedroom house to a two (2) bedroom house.
The following changes have been made in the floor plan of our home.

TEST PROCEDURE: System was inspected and measured. Tank was
found with 4 feet of cover and with a liquid level of 52.5 inch-
es. Tr"ench clean []L~t was 5.5 ft. deep and dry. 6-inch trench
monitor tube was 16 ft. deep with 124 inches o-f water. The moni
tor may not be perforated.
340 gallons o-~ clean water" was added to the trench while the
water- ].evels in the tank and the monitor tube were monitored. The
water level in the tank did not change~ while the level in the
monitor rose 12 inches. The absorpt:i.~)n was monitored .~or 75
minutes. During this time the water level in the sump dropped
back to the pre test level, indicating that all the added water
had passed out of the system
TEST RESULT: This system meets the code requirements of
the Heal th and Social Services
Department of the Municipality of Anchorage.
NOTE The operat:ional life o-~ all septic systems depencls on the
local soil conditions~ groundwater levels that may fluctuate
dur':i, ng the year~ and the water usage of the family being served

RE: Test Hole and Soil Log Report for Sanitary System
Lot 1, Block 1, Bunny Slopes Subdivision
Dear Mr. Masneri:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments regard-
ing soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This investigation
was performed in accordance with your request of August 21, 1975, and those
procedures outlined in a letter dated July 15, 1975, by Rolf Strickland of the
Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the Lot 1 area for the purpose of
defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary
system. Excavation was accomplished with an auger type drilling rig and the
test hole was extended to a total depth of 20.0 feet below ground surface.
The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was nog encountered in the test hOle.
