Re: Soils Investigation on Lot 27, Block 5, Bruin Park Subdivision
Dear Mr. Shaul:
Forwarded herewith are the results of the soils investigation for the
wastewater disposal system on lot 27, Blk 5, of Bruin Park Subdivision.
Uased on visits on February 13 and 17 and interviews with you the
following information was obtained, l'he lot is a triangular shaped
parcel with an area of about one third acre. The lot is level with
a gentle slope to the east. A 24' x 40' three bedroom trailer sits on
the lot and is ;]resently occupied by three adults who are employed
elsewhere. Information on details of the existing waste disposal system
is not available, but it is believed to consist of a 1000 gallon septic
tank followed by a seepage pit containing a volume of 1000 gallons.
The well is located about 135 feet from the septic tank vent and 175 feet
from the vent fron~ the seepage pit. The depth of the static water
l~)vel in the well wa.~ measured at 44'-4" below ground level.
The system has periodically overflowed from the septic tank vent pipe,
which is 18" above ground level, and has been pumped about every six
weeks. 1~00 gallons has beeh pumped from each vent. Liquid is heard
to be splashing back into the seepage pit after being pumped. This may
indicate seepage from the surrounding saturated soil rather than a
perched ground water table.
The liquid level in both ve~ts was the same; 48" below ground level. This
was measured on Fe!-,ruary 13 rior to p~.~ping. The bottom of the septic
~ank 'was measued at 7'-6" bei~',.:, ground level, and the bottom of the
.seepage pit was measured at 10'-6" below gro~.:,~d level.
On February 17 a test hole was excavated with a backhoe. A soils log is attached.
he ground was frozen to a depth of 3,feet. A visual analysis disclosed
1'-6" of organic silt and topsoil underlain to 11 feet by a glacial
deposit, consisting of silt in which many cobbles and boulders, up ~o
20" were embedded. This layer is highly'compact and appears to be
impermeable. Therefore a percolation test was not run on this layer.
Below this is a fine sand extending to at least 15' below ground level, at
which point the test hole was halted. After digging ceased the hol.e
slowly began fillin~ up with water. A percolation test in the sand
layer was therefore not feasible. '7
This liquid could have come from a perched water tableI but it it also
possible that it seeped in from the saturated soil surrounding the seepage
pit. The test hole was about 25' south of the seepage pit. It is
recon~ended that the ground water level be checked after breakup during
the excavation for the new subsurface'disposal system to ascertain whether
a mound system with a lift station is necessary. If feasible, a percolation
test may be run at that time to see if a lessor infiltrative area can be
used.
From a visual analysis the sandy layer is suitable for subsurface disposal
at a rate of about 250 square feet of absorption area per bedroom.
Therefore 750 square feet of absorption area would be required. The
vertical area of the walls above the sand layer should not be counted as
part of the absorption area. After excavating to the sand layer the
hole should be filled with a uniformly ?aded medium sand, which will be
the actual filter media. This new sand layer should be placed to a
height of at least four feet above the high water table. A minimum
thickness of 6"-12" of screened gravel should be placed above this level
and extend to just above the level of the new perforated pipe. If this
pipe level is above the elevation o? the existing septic tank outlet then a
"mound" system with a lift station will be necessary.
Although it has failed, the existing seepage pit still has some percolation
capability and it is recom~ended that it be used as an alternating system
with the new system, by use of a diversion v~ve at the outlet of the septic
tank. This will allow each of the systems to '~est periodically and allow
the clogging mat to degrade naturally. The resting unit can also act as
a standby unit in case of a failure.
It is estimated that the cost of the new seepage bed will be $4200.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. ! appreciate
this opportunity to be of service.
Si ncerely~ ~ours,
-~ust, P.E.

TANK: lQ00 gallons, 2 compartments
ABSORPTION FIELD: Drainfield; modified length of lines 157' with
5.75' of absorption material beneath ti'le.
SOIL: 250 square feet per bedroom.
TEST DATE: May 18, 1984
A total volume of 1000 gallons of water was first added to the
absorption field. This was performed by filling of the original
4 inch standpipe which is connected to the 17' leg of the drainfield.
The total rise in liquid level in the standpipe was 5.5 inches,
which corresponds to a rate of 181.82 gallons per inch.
The septic tank was then pumped and absorption monitoring was
carried out for 90 minutes.
By comparing the amount of gallons absorbed to the difference in
time for absorption a daily absorption capacity was estimated at
475 gallons per day. The required absorption capacity for a
3 bedroom house is 450 gpd. The system meets Municipality of
Anchorage requirements.
