Septic System Upgrade Permit Request
EMERGENCY TANK REPLACEMENT
This is a design narrative for a permit to install a 1,500‐gallon septic tank to replace an existing 1,500 gallon septic
tank to be issued for this property. The existing tank has collapsed and created an open hole full of raw sewage and
has put the home out of septic service, it will be abandoned per code. Currently the lot is developed. The proposed
replacement will be connected to the existing drain field. This lot and the surrounding lots are served by AWWU.
There are currently no wells within 200’ of this upgrade.
1. Upgrade Tank Design.
A foundation clean out installed if needed.
The tank will be located: 5’+ from any property line.
5’+ from any deck/stair support.
10’+ from building foundation.
10’+ from any water line.
100’+ from any surface water.
100’+ from any private wells.
200’+ from any public wells.
The proposed installation will not affect the future development of this or the surrounding lots.

In follow up to our recent conversations regarding the septic system
installation on the subject property, I am forwarding additional information.
Prior to performing any work on this property, I checked with your office to
see if there were any new criteria which would affect my job this year as
compared to 1985, and I was given a pink sheet of paper dated 12-5-85
entitled "Criteria for New On-Site Permit Issuance". I was aware that a new
ordinance (AO-21) was proposed, and was familiar with that ordinance, but
was unaware that it had been adopted.
Consequently, a field change during construction which required relocation of
the proposed septic system resulted in that system not being designed to
specifically meet the requirements of A0-21. However, I feel that the soil
conditions, the actual construction of the system,' and the fact that the
subdivision has an approved community water system can be used to show
that the system can satisfactorily meet the conditions of AO-21. As shown
on the soils log, dated 06-11-86, soils conditions where the septic system
was installed are sands and gravels meeting GW or SW and SP classifications.
This was determined by visual analysis of soils in a backhoe dug test pit
within ten feet of the Septic system location. At the time of digging, two
samples were collected, one of the sandy soil , and one of the more gravelly
soil. Although seive analyses were not run at the time, the samples were
retained for future analyses as necessary.

Upon my realization that there was a potential problem with approval of the
system, I ran sieve analyses on those samples. Results of those analyses are
attached.
Immediately following the visual analysis, installation of the septic system
was begun. The minimum system is shown on the as-built documentation
previously submitted. However, the excavator installed ten feet of extra
perforated pipe and a ten foot section of gravel filled trench between the
first clean-out downstream from the septic tank and the tee into the main
trench, and also installed extra gravel at the ends of the main trench.
Because this additional work was not considered necessary it was not shown
on the as-built. It was considered to be an inherent "safety factor" in the
system. The result is that the actual absorption area is approximately as
follows:
10 feet of "side" trench: (short leg of T)
6'Dx lO'Lx2= 120 sq. ft.
Main trench:(Length of main perforated pipe)
6' D x 36' L x 2 = 432 sq. ft.
Excess gravel at ends of main trench:
6' D x approx 8' L x 2 = 96 sq. ft.
Total Absorption Area 648 sq. ft.
Even considering that the side trench may not be entirely effective due to
it's proximity to the main trench, the system is still sized adequately to meet
a 5 minute/inch percolation rate.
The sieve analyses show that the soil (sample 86-07-B) visually classified
as a GW or SW actually meets a GW classification, and that the sand (sample
86-07-A) actually meets a ~ classification.

the significant sand content of the GW soil and the presence of the
~.sand layer underlying the system, I am of the opinion that the system is
completely adequate in both absorption capacity and in filtration capability.
