1. The attached approved design.
2. All requirements specified in Anchorage Municipal code Chapters 15.55 and 15.65 and the State of Alaska Wastewater
Disposal Regulations (18AAC72) and Drinking Water Regulations (18AAC80).
3. The wastewater code requires inspections during the installation. The engineer must notify the Development Services
Department at least 2 hours prior to each inspection. Provide notification by calling (907) 343-7904 (24 hours).
4. From October 15 to April 15, a subsurface soil absorption system under construction during freezing weather must either:
A. Open and Close on the same day.
B. Covered, sealed, and heated to prevent freezing. A�.
Special Provisions: The Engineer needs to do an additional test hole prior to the construction of
the septic field. Construction may proceed at your own risk before the 7 day water monitoring is
complete. Please submit stamped and signed results with the As -built Inspection Report. If the
results require a design change, construction of the system will stop pending On -Site review and
approval.

An existing bed has failed on the subject lot. An existing soil test will be used for the alternate
site. The design calls for a new 5' wide trench with new STEP tank: existing bed to be connected
via diverter valve. The entire subdivision is on private wells and septic systems. The terrain slope
is low relief. The system size is 3 bedrooms.
Please review the wastewater system design for the existing duplex. I have included design plans
& specs, design guidelines, & soil tests. If there is need for additional information or clarification
please give me a call.

Steele Estates Lot 5
Wastewater System Sizing: This is an existing 3 -bedroom, single family home. The
existing bed is in failure. A new STEP tank will be installed, with valve to existing bed.
The existing septic tanks will be decommissioned per UPC. Neighbor lots are served by
septic systems and private wells; there are no conflicts. The topography is gentle gradient.
A previous soil test indicated a GW & SP soil at the new trench site; additional soil test at
construction can be completed if necessary. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered.
An application rate of 143 FTI/bdrm will be used for the trench. Trench length = 429
FTI/5' x .5 reduction factor = 42.9' trench, say 43' (4' effective)
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the
Municipality of Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water
Regulations and Wastewater Regulations.
• New 1250 Gallon STEP tank. Anchorage Tank or Equal.
• 5' minimum between the tank/lift station and bed. 10' minimum to property line
from trench.
• 3' of cover and insulation is required for force main; 2" Minimum thickness for
insulation.
• Tank & solid pipe must be set on well compacted, stable soil.
• 4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required 1' to 4' from foundation
wall, prior to any 90 degree bend in 4 inch line.
• All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
• In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
• Trench to be placed level, minimum of 4' to groundwater, 6' to bedrock from drain -
rock.
• Drain rock to be ''/I" to 2 %I" screened. Drain rock to be distributed uniformly.
• Force main to be 1.5" Schedule 40 PVC or equal.
• Distribution pipe to be 1.5" Schedule 40 PVC w/ 1/8" orifice @ 18" on -center.
Perforated pipe to be installed level with perforations down.
• Silt barrier (filter fabric) to be installed above the drain rock.
• Smeared bed must be raked or scarified before drain rock placement.
• The finish grade must be mounded to promote drainage away from trench.
• Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
• Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789,
ABS ASTM D2661,
Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
• Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.
• Insulation board to be extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Styrofoam HI/equal)

SPECIFICATIONS FOR ON-SITE SEPTIC SYSTEM
LEGAL: Lot 5 of proposed Steele Estates Subdivision
A_ GENERAL
1. The well and septic plan are for single family residence use only.
2. The drawing and or site plan shall be a part of this specification.
3. All materials and workmanship shall meet the requirements of
the Anchorage.Department of Health and State D.E.C..
4. All soil tests are advisory to the design and are to be
verified or modified in the field by the engineer.
5. All excavations and depths are advisory and are to be verified or
modified in the field by the contractor to meet MOA, D.E.0 require-
ments.
6. It is the responsibility of the owner to obtain all necessary
permits or easements and to locate any adjacent multi -family wells.
7. It is always recommended that a surveyor locate the nearest lot line
position and the location of any easements.
B. DRAINFIELD
1. The existing trench is to be abandoned by disconnecting leach line.
2. The bottom of the bed shall be level, plus or minus 1.5."
3. The total depth of the bed is to be no more than 4' below ground
surface at monitor tube location. The septic tank outlet elevation
is 3.3' below ground.
4. Soil or combination of soil and extruded board insulation to a depth
of 4' or equivalent is to be placed over the trench.
S. The area over the trench is to be finished graded to prevent ponding
of surface water runoff.
6. The septic tank and leachfield must not be closer than 100 feet to
any existing private well, 150' to any Class "C" well, or 200 feet
to any community well.

Dear Mr. Butera:
Your request for a waiver of the 100 foot separation required between
the septic tank and well on the subject property has been granted under
the following conditions:
(1) The existing septic tanks must be inspected. The tank must be in
good structural condition with no significant corrosion evident.
(2) Calder-type'couplings (or equivalent) must be installed on all tank
connections including cleanouts.
(3) Manholes must be gasketed.
This waiver will be considered valid after written documentation that the
above conditions have been satisfied are received by this department. The
90 foot separation between the septic tank and well will be approved. This
waiver is valid for the existing three bedroom single family dwelling only.

Dear Mr. Morris:
On behalf of my client, Mr. Mark Steele, I am submitting the
information necessary for your determination of a waiver of separation
distance, well to septic tank, to 90' for the above referenced lot.
The septic system is being upgraded and this waiver is required
for complete approval. The tank and existing leachfield were installed
by the owner without being inspected and approved by the Municipality.
Our asbuilt of the proposed subdivision shows the well to septic tank
distance as 901. There are two 500 gallon tanks placed in series, with
a tank outlet depth of 3.3'. The enclosed well log shows that the well
draws from a gravel aquifer at a depth of 70'. The casing is
continuous to 70, and passes through a 28' clay layer. The surface
topography is such that any seepage would be directed away from the
well location toward a 5% slope to the west. The subsurface soil is a
SW -SP type with a perc. rating of 125. A water sample for coliform
bacteria was satisfactory. The well is located opposite the house from
the septic tank with the house foundation located between the tank and
house. During construction the tank can be inspected for caulder
couplings.
