Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 RE: Sunset Hills West, Blk 4 Lot 6 Septic System Upgrade To Whom It May Concern: Attached please find the application and supporting documentation to upgrade the septic system for the referenced 4 bedroom house. The original septic system was installed in 1977, and the drainfield is now surcharged. It is proposed to retain the trench, reducing its size, and to abandon the septic tank in place. The proposed design is based upon a test hole dug on September 26, 2005 to 15.5 ft. On October 8, the hole was effectively deepened to 19.2 ft by driving a steel monitoring tube from the bottom of the test hole. This was to investigate the potential for bedrock or groundwater. No bedrock was encountered, and there was no water after 7 days of monitoring. The proposed drainfield will be installed in 3 different soil strata between 3.2 ft and 13.2 ft. Percolation tests were performed at 2.0-2.5 ft, 3.5-4.0 ft, and 6.0-6.5 ft. The results were 1.8, 5.0, and 4.0 minutes per inch, respectively. An application rate of 1.2 gpd/ft' is used in the design. The soil log is attached. It is proposed to reduce the drainfield size by 5 ft, to allow for a 10 ft separation between the old and new drainfields. Since they will be positioned end-to-end and the new trench is downhill from the old one, I do not believe that this will compromise the absorption area, even with 10 ft effective depth in the new trench. The soil rating on the old field was 125 ft2/bedroom. By reducing the number of bedrooms to 4 (consistent with the actual conditions in the house and the tax records), 500 ft2 of absorption area will be required. Therefore, a length of 50 ft, with 5 ft effective depth, will suffice. The slope at the top of the hill was measured at 40%. However, the slope at the drainfield location is 25% and is of no concern. There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system. I am not aware of any adverse effect that this upgrade would have on any adjacent properties' water and wastewater treatment needs. Thank you for consideration of this permit application.
