RE: TI 5N RIW Section $, Lot 211, Chugiak
Dear Dan,
The subject design required a change due to a 20 year record snowmelt which filled the
original test holes with runoff. This record runoffevent is still impacting this particular
area. Two new test holes were excavated upslope ofthe previous test holes. These new
test holes demonstrated a slightly better percolation rate, possible due to the fact that the
original test holes were located on a trail. Water was encountered in both new test holes
during excavation and appeared to be continued runoffflowing down-slope. Test hole 2A
is about 5 feet higher in elevation than test hole IA. Test hole 2A measured water at 10'
below ground level and test hole lA measured at 4' below ground level. We propose a 5
foot-wide trench at the level oftest hole 2A, perpendicular to the fall line ofthe slope. We
are proposing a trench depth oftwo feet below natural ground, with 1' insulation and
mounded cover to match the slope. This will give a separation of 6' to water.
The area has large 2.5 acre lots and is served by a Private Water & Septic Systems. I have
included design plans & specs, design guidelines, & soil tests. Ifthere is need for
additional information or clarification please give me a call.
Sincerely,
NonhRim Engineering

,$PECIFICATi0NS & DESIGN GUIDELINES
Wastewater System Sizing: Due to thc large amount of snow-melt from a record 20-year snowfall,
the original test holes filled with mnoffduring breakup. Two new test holes were completed
upslope ofthe old test holes. The new test holes percolation rote was higher resulting in a more
favorable application rate. The septic tank sizing will remain the same at 1500 gallons for the $
bedroom home. The large lot size of 2.5 acres allows for the septic system to be moved with no
adverse impact to the neighboring lots. The neighboring lots range from 1.25 to 2.5 acres and are
on on-site systems. The adjacent lot to the west is a single family home with septic system and
private well. The lot to the east is 2.5 acres with developed on-lot systems. The lot to the north has
a septic system near the property line, but all required separation distances have been maintained.
No conflicts to any neighbor lots is anticipated. Soil tests found typical soil for this area; a silty
sandy gravcl. The system utilized a 5' wide trench with alloxvable reduction factor. An application
rate of 1.2 GPD/FYa with 0.78 reduction factor for utilizing a 5' wide i~ ~ch and 1.5' ofgravel
below the perforated pipe. Monitoring revealed groundwater at 10'depth at Test Hole 2A and at 4'
depth at Test ttole IA. Test Hole IA is 5' lower than Test Hole 2A. We propose to construct a
100' trench across the slope at the same level as Test Hole 2A; this should give the required
separation to groundxvater.
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the Municipality of
Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water Regulations and Wastcwater
Regulations.
· Two compartment septic tank

positioned to provide cleanont access towards the tank and to,yards the absorption field.
· All clcanouts must ext~d to at least ground level
